Inspiring Conversations with Jacovie Burns of The 144k Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacovie Burns.

Hi Jacovie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m happy to share how the 144K Collective came to life and where we stand today. We launched earlier this year as a purpose-driven organization dedicated to impactful, boots-on-the-ground giving. Our first initiatives included neighborhood gas giveaways when prices spiked, random acts of kindness like conspicuous tipping at local cafés, and direct financial support for those in need. With a goal of contributing $250 million annually, we’re still in the launch phase, implementing strategies to scale our growth and impact.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly hasn’t all been smooth sailing, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Pioneering an entirely new model of purposeful giving across multiple industries is inherently daunting. We ask people to rethink long-standing habits, and those entrenched mindsets can clash with fresh ideas. Cognitive dissonance is real when you introduce industry-shifting strategies in places where none existed before.

One of our biggest early challenges was conveying the true value of The Collective. Our slogan, “We’re here to help,” encompasses a wide array of initiatives, so distilling that into a clear, memorable message took constant refinement. We also learned that crowd-sourcing done right means more than raising funds; it means building trust and transparency at every step, which requires time and patience.

Finally, every day I’m called to rise to a higher purpose. Leading in tax strategy and community outreach is one thing, and doing so with singular focus and unwavering purpose stretches me in the best possible ways and makes every hurdle feel like progress toward something bigger than myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I wear several hats across tax, finance, music, and community impact, but at my core I empower people and build lasting relationships:

I’m most proud of witnessing our real-time impact. From gas giveaways and “Can You Make Me Laugh?” events to pet adoptions and direct assistance, every dollar is tracked, measured, and maximized, and seeing people’s lives change is deeply rewarding.

What sets me apart
I blend strategic rigor with genuine human connection, whether advising on tax credits or dropping the perfect beat. I thrive on innovation, measure every outcome, and always ask, “How can we make more impact, more transparently?” That combination of creativity, accountability, and purpose is what makes my work and the organizations I build truly unique.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Lead with heart, honor boundaries
· Be genuine. Approach mentors with curiosity and kindness, not an agenda. Ask about their passions and challenges.
· Respect their time. Follow up with short, focused messages, share a takeaway from their work, then ask one thoughtful question.

Seek out their story, not just their status
· Look for life experience. I’m drawn to people who’ve “bumped their heads” along the way.
· Join communities where real stories thrive: local chambers, mastermind groups, or industry workshops.

Connect over aspirations
· Frame mentorship as mutual growth. Describe your “always a student” mindset and offer your own skills whether it be social-media support, event help, fresh perspectives, etc.
· Keep the learning curve visible. Share updates on what you implemented from their advice and where you’re still wrestling.

Bonus tip: Pay it forward
Introduce peers who should meet, share helpful articles, or lend a hand at events. Generosity spreads quickly in networks and often circles back with unexpected opportunities.
