Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanne Martin.
Hi Jeanne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always loved thrift shopping. I love being able to explore and find great items for great prices.
In my professional career, I am a CPA. I worked in Public Accounting at a Big 4 firm for several years and then had the opportunity to work for a major regional department store for over 10 years in a variety of corporate finance roles.
Our family moved to the North Dallas area in 2020 for a career opportunity for my husband.
In 2024, I decided that I wanted to open my own business. Uptown Cheapskate was a great way to combine my love of thrifting with my professional experience.
We looked at several different potential locations in North Dallas but ultimately selected The District in Little Elm. This location offered us the opportunity to serve a local market which did not have many retail options, and the City of Little Elm has been very supportive of our new business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have not had a completely smooth road. It took us several months and a couple different attempts to find the right location for the store. Ultimately, we were able work out a good, mutually beneficial, long term lease with ownership in The District. They have been very supportive of our store and eager to bring this great amenity to their residents and the community as a whole.
During the construction phase, we also had a major hurdle related to our building HVAC set up. With the energetic and creative support of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation we were able to clear the hurdle and stay on track for our store opening.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Uptown Cheapskate Little Elm is the best place in Little Elm and the surrounding communities to get great gently used fashion at a great price!
Uptown Cheapskate is a great place to buy current trends and unique finds. We offer both women’s and men’s clothing and shoes in all adult sizes. We also sell handbags, hats, belts, fragrance, and other fashion accessories.
We buy the clothes, shoes, and accessories in the store from the community. That means the money we spend to purchase our inventory is spent with local people right in the local area. Through our Cash For Clothes program you can bring in your clothes, our team will assess them while you shop, and then we will give you an offer on the spot for cash or store credit.
At our location, we offer free personalized styling services. You can get expert styling assistance for any occasion, for a wardrobe refresh, or just for fun!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to us most is being a great resource for our community. We want to be the place that everyone can go for all their fashion needs, and also a place where people can earn some money by selling us items.
It is also important to us to be a great place to work. We promote a fun, positive, family atmosphere in the store for our team.
