Inspiring Conversations with Jessica Hayden of Hustle Creative Studio, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Hayden.

Jessica Hayden

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, where I attended various schools throughout the city. I completed my high school journey at L.V. Berkner High School, achieving personal goals through AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination Center), Track and Field, and Cross Country. Those experiences were filled with laughter and prepared me for new challenges in college. From 2013 to 2016, I attended Tyler Junior College, focusing on becoming a social worker due to my passion for making a difference in this world. However, as I delved into my social work classes, I found it emotionally difficult to confront the harsh realities of the cases. Consequently, I switched my major toward the end of the year to focus on basic courses. Amidst this transition, I pondered my next steps. One memorable moment occurred when I stumbled upon the Apache Pow Wow newspaper stand after class. Intrigued, I visited the newspaper office to learn how I could get involved. The editor encouraged me to find a story to write and submit it by the end of the week. I took her advice and covered the Baptist Student Ministry event called “Live Out Loud.” The event resonated with students from across campus, allowing them to express their emotions throughout the night. Capturing the essence of the moment for my first student article energized me and made me realize that I was destined to be a professional writer.

Although Tyler Junior College didn’t offer a communications degree, I knew my next college would. I returned to Dallas in May 2016 with an Associate of Arts degree in Social Work and a dream of becoming an accomplished writer. I then decided to attend Austin College in Sherman, Texas, to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. I participated in valuable leadership courses that enhanced my skills in teamwork, project management, and advocating for larger initiatives. However, after a year, I left in search of greater diversity, journalism opportunities, and the chance to create lasting memories at an alma mater I could truly call home. Prairie View A&M University became my ideal choice.

Before arriving on campus, I had the privilege of attending the New Leadership Texas Summer Program, which taught me the importance of my voice and clarified my aspirations. At Prairie View, I chartered an IGNITE (Women Empowerment in Politics) chapter with my college sister, Kirstein Budwine. We recognized the many incredible young women on campus who could lead fearlessly in their pursuits. This platform was designed for them, and I was there to support and bring their events to life. Additionally, I served as President of the PVAMU National Association of Black Journalists Chapter and inducted into the Lambda Pi Eta Communications Society. Choosing to leave Austin College for a Historically Black University was undoubtedly the best decision I made, and I will forever cherish the experiences and growth I gained. I entered Prairie View in August 2017 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications in August 2019. Fast forward to a wonderful opportunity with Ms. Cheryl Smith, Owner and Chief Editor of I Messenger Media, LLC. I began as an intern before graduating, gaining invaluable real-world experience. I thoroughly enjoyed observing the daily operations and writing for a female-led, Black-owned company. Returning to a full-time position was truly a dream come true.

After two years, I ventured into freelancing, which led to a fellowship with Election SOS, partnering with WFAA. During the election season between former President Barack Obama and Donald Trump, I utilized my multimedia skills to research story topics via social media and create data spreadsheets while communicating with various counties throughout the city. This experience sparked the idea of starting my own business in the near future. In 2023, I took on a role as the Helen Giddings Fellow at the African American Museum, which allowed me to explore all departments and envision my future in the art and culture space. Working closely with Dr. W. Marvin Dulaney in Archives and History was truly enlightening, as I absorbed a wealth of information. Eventually, the fellowship concluded, prompting me to consider launching a digital marketing company. It took me three to four months to gather everything necessary for establishing Hustle Creative Studio, LLC, which was founded on October 2, 2024. Throughout this time, creating my business plan, developing the website, and remaining committed to my decisions were crucial for bringing my vision to life.

After launching my business, I was also offered the opportunity to oversee the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program from start to finish. Dr. Dulaney had confidence in my capability to represent the museum effectively. He recognized that my commitment to all my endeavors made me the ideal candidate for the role. Not only did I complete the program effectively, but we also obtained a second-year contract to further our small business initiatives. This achievement has motivated me to ambitiously pursue greater goals for the upcoming year.

Currently, I am engaged in various digital marketing projects through my company, Hustle Creative Studio, LLC. We provide tailored solutions for businesses, reaching not only our local area but also expanding to other states. After seven years as a multimedia professional, starting my own business has been a long-held dream. I am deeply thankful to all the companies, friends, and family who have supported me throughout this journey. It is with pride to be the Founder of Hustle Creative Studio, LLC. If you had told me that all the challenges I faced growing up in a low-income family, enduring tough situations, and working my way through high school and college would lead me to this moment, I wouldn’t have believed you. However, I am grateful that this blessing arrived precisely when it was meant to.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My professional journey has been quite the roller coaster, never experiencing a seamless transition. I’ve encountered phases where success seemed elusive, often praying for a silver lining. A few years ago, I faced the challenge of auto theft, which hindered my financial goals. Nevertheless, I remained determined not to let these setbacks deter me from chasing new projects. As long as I wake up each day, I will continue to seek out new opportunities, driven by my desire to achieve a healthy financial life.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Your services are invaluable, and it’s essential to never let anyone undermine your pricing. Stand firm on your rates, as your business doesn’t thrive on discounts. Always be purposeful with your time and pray about every aspect of your work. I have consistently been thankful for the blessings God has brought into my life.

Be prepared to adapt when things aren’t going your way in the moment; this doesn’t mean it won’t ultimately work out. In addition to my insights on starting your business, it’s crucial to embrace constructive criticism for personal and professional growth—I’ve learned this over time. Attend events where you don’t know anyone to broaden your networking circles.

Finally, trust that you will encounter individuals who can support and mentor you throughout your entrepreneurial journey. This has been my experience, and I feel immensely blessed and honored to have such support every day.
