Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Buhrke.
Hi Jim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Chicago and lived there until 7 years ago. I retired from the Chicago Police Department after 21 years of service. After that I went to work doing Executive Protection for the Boeing Company. When they opened an office in Plano, I decided to relocate and found a home in McKinney. I had always wanted to own my own business, so after working for Boeing for 10 years I decided to do just that and formed Jimmy Dogs Mobile Kitchen LLC. I started out with just a hot dog cart and worked my way up to a full-size food trailer which I operate with my wife Sandy. Business is going well and we are growing our customer base. We do all sorts of events like carnivals, festivals, HOA events, grand openings, weddings, small parties and catering events.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning a business is never a smooth road I have discovered. You are only as good as your last event and you must continuously look forward to the future, looking for leads and seeking out new opportunities. Just because you get settled in, working specific events doesn’t mean those events will remain available to you. Sometimes things happen that are completely out of your control. It is very difficult, but then again, there is nothing in life that is meaningful that comes easy. If it’s hard, you are on the right path.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We provide quality food at a fair price to festival attendees, employee appreciation days, weddings, private parties and catered events. Although we specialize in hamburgers and hot dogs, we have the ability to serve a wide variety of foods such as Philly Cheesesteaks, chicken fingers, corn dogs, fries, chili fries, egg rolls, mozzarella sticks and more. If you want something a little more exotic, we can make chicken shawarma, lamb Kafka, pasta and much more. We also serve amazing deserts such as banana pudding, brownies, cookies and rice crispy treats which are all homemade.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Ben Wilson and Jason Brown have been tremendously influential in helping me create the business I have. I met them through a group called Vendors United which is a Facebook group that has hundreds of vendors nationwide and we have two Zoom meetings a week to talk about the food business. This group has been invaluable to me.
