Inspiring Conversations with Jordan Sakala of laborhutt.com

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Sakala.

Jordan Sakala

Hi Jordan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey begins in Zambia, the place where I first opened my eyes to the world. Yet, when I was nine years old, my family decided to spring a surprise on me by relocating to the United States. It was a colossal change, to say the least. Adjusting to a brand-new country and culture was no small task. I vividly remember being mystified by a seemingly ordinary appliance – the microwave. I couldn’t fathom how food could magically heat up in a matter of minutes. It was just one of the many mysteries I encountered during those early days in the U.S.

Fast forward, and I found myself standing at a crossroads with no clear direction in sight. That’s when a rather random idea popped into my head – why not join the U.S. Navy? So, I did just that. The Navy stationed me in the sunny city of San Diego, California, where I gained more than I ever expected. I learned essential life lessons formed unbreakable bonds with from various backgrounds. After my time in the Navy, I decided it was time to hit the books. I enrolled at the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated with a finance degree. It was during my college years that my entrepreneurial spirit began to stir.

Post-graduation, I took a leap of faith and founded my very first startup, Foodvine. The concept was simple: connecting talented home chefs with food-loving consumers. But, as fate would have it, my enthusiasm couldn’t prevent the venture from falling flat on its face. Undeterred by this setback, I launched Laborhutt after.

Laborhutt helps people find neighbors with pickup trucks to assist with moving heavy items purchased from platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, Offerup, or even in-store. Over the last several months, hundreds of people around Dallas use it as a convenient and affordable way to move items.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building Laborhutt has been anything but a smooth ride. I committed to working on it full-time in February of 2022, and it wasn’t until a year later that we started seeing real growth. One of the initial hurdles in establishing our community was getting people to trust our platform and spread the word about it. This process was time-consuming and, at times, quite frustrating. Building trust and sparking conversations about Laborhutt took patience and persistence.

We’ve been impressed with laborhutt.com, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Laborhutt is your go-to platform for connecting with a neighbor who owns a pickup truck, and they’re ready to lend a hand when you need to move those bulky items you snagged on Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, Offerup, or even in a local store. What truly sets Laborhutt apart is its community-driven approach, making it a more affordable choice compared to alternatives. In fact, it’s often more budget-friendly than renting a U-Haul because you skip the hassle of refilling gas, plus you get an extra pair of helping hands. You can discover neighbors with a variety of vehicles, including pickup trucks, box trucks, and cargo vans, all eager to assist with your heavy-lifting needs.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve always been guided by my passions and instincts, a trait that has been with me since childhood. I firmly believe that taking risks and facing adversity are vital elements for personal growth, whether it’s in terms of intellectual development or any other aspect of life. These experiences shape us, challenge us, and ultimately help us become better versions of ourselves.
