Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Lindsley.
Hi Josh, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey as a longevity physcian started after ballooning up to 270 pounds in my late 20’s. While in residency, working 80 hour weeks, fostering 2 kids, I really let myself go. It all changed when semaglutide came out, a GLP-1 medication that showed promising weight loss, I intially lost 60 pounds and thought “WOW this is great, why do I still feel terrible”? Thats when I got my first DEXA scan, and realized I had taken the easy way out, when I lost of that weight a signifcant portion was muscle, I was “skinny fat”. I realized that there are no short cuts, and it took real life style changes in combitiations with medications to see true change. I applied this to my focus of medicine, in the ER I spend a lot of time metaphorically pulling people out of the deep end while they are downing, when they should have been given the tools long ago to actually swim. Traditional medicine treats disease as it happens, I wanted to start a practice where we treat disease before it happens, and help people live a fulfilled life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No way! The road is always long and never straight. I love to compare this to aging and muscle decline, if you look at graphs it will show you that muscle declines slowly after 30 at a steady rate, which is not true for most people. What people don’t see is that those population graphs are filled with thousands of people that smooth the curve, but each individual usely doesnt have a steady decline of muscle, but descrete moments, think sickness, injury, morning, depression, that cause sudden dips and regression. Life is like this, we pick a goal thinking it will be linear, but their are many setbacks along the way, and you might not always make the goal, but if you focus on the journy, the hard work, the long nights, those are the moments you find happiness. Its not about the easy rode, its about your rode that no one else can travel but you, so enjoy it!
We’ve been impressed with Highland Longevity, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a specialized longevity clinic that practices prevenative medicine with the gold standard tools for measurement, this includes an in office VO2max device, DEXA scan, comprehensive labs, and providers trained in preventative disease. We focus on conditions like obesity, hormone imbalance, injury recovery, sleep, and how your habits impact those processes. We believe in lifestyle first, medications second approach. We also do aesthetics! because we believe people should present to outside world as good as they feel inside.
How do you think about happiness?
I think the daily grind makes me happy, pushing myself to give the best version of myself for my patients and my family. The two foster kids I mentioned early that I had in residency I ended up adopting, and they bring me true happiness.
