Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Brooks.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Houston, Texas, shaped by education, friends, diversity, and athletics. After graduating from Texas Christian University, my path took a decisive turn in the years following 9/11, when I joined the U.S. Army as an infantry Soldier during the Global War on Terrorism. That experience—leading, serving, and learning in high-stakes environments—fundamentally changed how I view responsibility, stewardship, and leadership.
Over time, my calling expanded beyond combat arms. I pursued theological education at Phoenix Seminary and later Dallas Theological Seminary, while serving consecutively in the Arizona Army National Guard and the Texas Army National Guard. Seminary was a season of deep formation—intellectually, spiritually, and personally—where I learned how to walk alongside people through complexity, uncertainty, and life-defining decisions.
In late 2019, I was commissioned as a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve. In 2021–2022, I deployed again to the Middle East, this time serving as a chaplain with the 90th Aviation Support Battalion out of White Settlement, Texas. Supporting Soldiers and families in that role reinforced something I had seen repeatedly: many high-performing people are carrying immense responsibility but lack a trusted guide to help them think clearly about the future—financially, relationally, and strategically.
Alongside my military service, I worked in the financial services industry—first at Fidelity Investments in 2016, then at Edward Jones in 2020, and later at an independent firm in 2023. Each chapter taught me what worked, what didn’t, and where the industry often fell short for people who value integrity, long-term thinking, and aligned decision-making.
In 2025, I launched Exponential Advisors, a fee-only financial planning firm built to serve military veterans and high-performing families who want clarity, discipline, and stewardship—not hype or pressure. The firm reflects the intersection of my life experiences: military leadership, pastoral care, and professional financial planning.
Today, I serve as a chaplain in the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion in Grand Prairie, Texas, while continuing to build Exponential Advisors with the same mission-first mindset I learned in the Army.
On the personal side, my greatest joy and grounding force is my family. My wife and I were married in 2016, and we’re raising four young boys—JJ (8), Hudson (6), Micah (4), and Sammy, who turns two this March. Building a business while raising a young family has been both humbling and motivating. It keeps me focused on what truly matters: legacy, faithfulness, and building something that serves people well over the long term.
When I look back, the path isn’t one I could have planned—but it’s one I’m deeply grateful for. Every chapter has prepared me for the work I’m doing now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road—and in many ways, the challenges are what shaped me most.
My parents divorced when I was very young, and my biological father was later murdered after being reported missing for months. That loss, combined with instability at home, meant growing up without a consistent or healthy father figure. My early years included exposure to alcoholism and emotional and physical abuse, which created both hardship and a deep desire to understand resilience, responsibility, and what it means to lead well.
Those experiences pushed me to seek counseling, to do the hard work of healing, and ultimately to anchor my life in my Christian faith. Faith became—and remains—my source of hope, perspective, and steadiness in seasons of uncertainty.
The military has also presented its own challenges. Service is demanding, humbling, and unforgiving at times. I’ve worked hard, made mistakes, learned from them, and kept moving forward. Progress has never been linear, but perseverance has always mattered more than perfection.
Marriage and parenting have been equally formative. Marriage is not easy, but I’m deeply grateful for my wife, Stephanie, and the partnership we’ve built together. Raising four young boys is demanding and exhausting—but also the most rewarding work I’ve ever done.
Entrepreneurship has been no different. Building a business from the ground up requires patience, discipline, and a willingness to endure uncertainty. If it were easy, more people would do it.
Through all of this, I’ve come to believe that life isn’t meant to be easy—it’s meant to be meaningful. Purpose, service, relationships, and showing up locally for the people entrusted to you matter far more than comfort or convenience. Every challenge has reinforced that truth and shaped how I serve others today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Exponential Advisors. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Exponential Advisors is a fee-only financial planning firm based in North Texas, built for people who take responsibility seriously, especially military veterans and high-performing families. We work with these two segments across the Dallas–Fort Worth area to provide clarity, discipline, and long-term perspective around their finances.
At its core, the firm helps clients make confident decisions across the areas that matter most: retirement planning, investments, military benefits, tax awareness, and legacy planning. Many of the people we serve are successful in their careers yet frustrated by the complexity of the financial system or the lack of truly objective guidance. We exist to bring structure, calm, and strategy to those decisions—especially during major life transitions.
What sets Exponential Advisors apart is the combination of backgrounds behind the work. The firm blends professional financial planning with military leadership experience and pastoral care. That means clients aren’t just getting technical advice—they’re working with someone who understands pressure, uncertainty, and the weight of real-world decisions.
We’re especially known for serving military veterans and their families throughout Texas. Military benefits—such as TSP, pensions, VA considerations, and survivor planning—are powerful but complex, and they’re often misunderstood or poorly explained. Because of my own service and continued role as an Army chaplain, I understand both the technical details and the human realities veterans face when transitioning, retiring, or building a civilian life.
The firm also takes a thoughtful, educational approach to modern financial innovation, including helping clients understand emerging technologies like Bitcoin and digital assets in the context of risk management, long-term planning, and responsible stewardship. We don’t so speculation or hype.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the firm’s commitment to integrity and restraint. Exponential Advisors is intentionally fee-only, fiduciary, and relationship-driven. There’s no pressure, no product sales, and no shortcuts—just careful planning designed to serve clients and families well over decades.
I want readers to know that Exponential Advisors is about more than money. It’s about stewardship, responsibility, and helping people align their financial decisions with the life they want to live and the legacy they want to leave—right here in the communities we call home across North Texas.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people are surprised to learn that I can freestyle rap—and have been doing it since growing up in Houston. It was a creative outlet that sharpened my ability to think on my feet, listen closely, and communicate clearly in real time.
Like a lot of creative habits, it went quiet for a while when I was deep in the corporate world. Things can get pretty buttoned-up in those environments. Now that I’m running my own firm, I’ve rediscovered that side of myself—and I’ve learned there’s room for both discipline and creativity.
In a funny way, freestyle rap and financial planning have more in common than people might expect. Both require preparation, adaptability, and the ability to respond thoughtfully in the moment. I don’t rap in client meetings—but the mindset definitely carries over.
