Inspiring Conversations with Katy Boykin of DIY Dream Site

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Boykin.

Katy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I never planned to become a web designer. Back in 2019, I started a blog and quickly realized I loved building the website even more than writing the lifestyle content. Other bloggers began asking for help, and before long, people were saying, “You clearly love this. Can I just hire you?”

What started as a fun side project turned into something bigger. In 2021, I sold my blog for a five-figure price and officially launched my web design business, DIY Dream Site. Within 18 months, I grew it to six figures and have since helped nearly 100 clients launch custom websites that reflect their personality, purpose, and goals.

Today, DIY Dream Site offers more than just custom design. We also create WordPress child themes, which are like website designs in a box, so content creators and business owners can build their own professional sites by following our easy-to-use tutorials. No coding is required, and the process helps people launch faster and feel confident managing their sites long after launch.

From April 2024 to October 2025, I also served as a Product Marketing Manager for some of the leading WordPress brands while continuing to run my business. Taking this role was a natural fit because I had been using the website-building tools I would be marketing to build client projects over the previous three years. I brought deep product knowledge and a strong desire to improve the user experience in meaningful ways. During my time there, our team consistently exceeded performance goals, often reaching 20 to 40 percent above target month after month. Later, I was promoted to Senior Product Marketing Manager, where I expanded from managing one brand to overseeing strategy for four within the WordPress ecosystem. It was an exciting season of growth where I helped shape go-to-market strategies, refine pricing models, and develop content that reached hundreds of thousands of website owners around the world.

In October 2025, I decided to return to running my business full-time. I am now more passionate than ever about helping content creators, service providers, and product sellers take control of their online presence and build a thriving business they love. My goal is simple: to blend beautiful design, strategic marketing, and practical education because I know how powerful a website can be in transforming both a business and a life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship always has its ups and downs, but I’m grateful for the challenges because each one helped me grow. When I first started, I was figuring everything out on my own, like how to price my services, find clients, manage projects, and still deliver great work. I made plenty of mistakes. I undercharged, took on too much, and learned the hard way how important boundaries and systems really are.

Like many business owners, I had to learn how to balance creativity with structure. I’ve always loved the design side, but running a business requires strong processes, time management, and strategy. Over time, I built workflows, created templates, and refined my process to make the experience smoother for both me and my clients.

When I stepped into corporate life as a Product Marketing Manager, I faced a new challenge: balancing a demanding job with my own business. It was intense but rewarding. I had to become very intentional with my time and get clear about my priorities. That season taught me how to lead with focus, build systems that scale, and protect what matters most.

Every challenge made me stronger and gave me a deeper sense of purpose. It’s what fuels my passion to help others build thriving online businesses without burning out along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
It will be interesting to see how AI continues to shape the web design industry. It has already caused major disruption, and some people are predicting that websites will eventually become unnecessary. But right now, a website is still a business owner’s single source of truth. It’s the one place they truly own and can control the narrative. Platforms like social media, Google Business Profiles, or AI marketplaces can help with visibility, but they’re marketing tools, and if used alone, only offer a scattered strategy.

A website remains the center of trust, conversion, and credibility. It’s where business owners can curate their message, educate visitors, and guide them toward taking action.

In a world powered by AI, skepticism will reach an all-time high. Trust will become one of the most valuable currencies in marketing, and your website is the best place to humanize your brand. This is where you can add videos so people can see and hear you, include real photos instead of stock images, and tell your story in a way that builds connection and confidence.

Over the next five to ten years, AI will continue to make web design faster, smarter, and more personalized. But it will never replace the human element. The future of this industry isn’t about eliminating websites; it’s about creating more intentional, authentic online spaces that help people connect with your business and find solutions that solve their biggest challenges.
