Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Hans.
Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started my love for dance when I was on my own high school Drill Team, FMHS Rosettes! I then went on to dance at Baylor University on their pom squad, which then led me to dance professionally as a Dallas Mavericks Dancer! While dancing professionally, I started working with some high school drill teams, choreographing for them and working with dancers on their skills. Not only did this show me that I had such a passion for creating routines, but it also showed that I was good at it!
I’ve been the assistant director for two drill teams now and I am currently a head drill team director in DFW. I also work with over 25 schools in Texas creating football, pep rally, contest, and show routines! I absolutely love what I do and am so thankful for every opportunity!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth at all! I think anyone that is an entrepreneur would agree with me on that! When you start your own thing, you have to not only be super confident in your abilities, but also network a TON and constantly think of new ways to market yourself. Throughout my journey, I’ve had schools tell me no so many times. But with every “no” I receive, I just view it as a challenge! How can I keep working on my craft, my website, my marketing, my network, to keep pushing and keep getting better!
As you know, we’re big fans of Kelly Hans Dance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I started Kelly Hans Dance to encompass all the things I do with freelance. I choreograph for high school, college, and pro dance teams all across the state of Texas. I also go into programs and work on technique with the dancers, clean/polish up dances, and add layers to dance routines to make them even better. I specialize in creating crowd-pleasing routines that are NEVER “cookie-cutter”. Everything I do is completely custom for the team and their needs.
In addition to choreography and master classes, I also offer private lessons for dancers who are training for a specific goal. I have dancers that I work with that are wanting to audition for their high school drill team, an officer position on drill team, college pom squad, or a pro team.
I am a super positive and uplifting dance instructor, while still having high expectations and a growth mindset. My goal is that whenever I leave a team, whether that is for choreography or a master class, that every dancer feels valued and is excited to grow as a dancer.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is the relationships I build with directors and dancers. One of the main reasons I even started doing freelance is because as a dancer myself, I always wanted a choreographer or dance teacher to be invested in me and my growth. I went to SO many private lessons over my years where I just felt like a dollar sign and not a value. My goal is to build relationships with students so that they feel valued, safe, and they can truly grow and transform as a dancer.
