Inspiring Conversations with Kenyada Garner of Boss’s Capital Ventures, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyada Garner

Hi Kenyada, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m from Arlington, TX, and graduated from Mansfield Timberview High School. My story? Whew, it’s been a journey! I started college at Houston Baptist University, but when the 2008 recession hit, both of my parents lost their jobs. That tuition wasn’t cheap, and I knew I had to make a change. So, I transferred to Texas Southern University—best decision ever. But let’s be real, I didn’t get to fully experience the HBCU life because I was on a mission. I worked full-time while going to school full-time, grinding from 6 AM to 9 PM most days. I’d leave my apartment at the crack of dawn and wouldn’t come back until the streetlights were on. It was exhausting, but I knew I was building something bigger than me.

I watched my family struggle and told myself, this cycle ends with me.

After graduation, I landed what I thought was my dream job—working for the Dallas Cowboys! I was in their hospitality division, handling accounting for their events, and it was everything you’d expect—huge experiences, major networking, and a front-row seat to the sports world. People would kill for that job, and I was grateful for the opportunity. But after a while, I realized that outside of the culture and the perks, I wasn’t being challenged. I was finishing my work before noon every day, and for someone who thrives on learning and growth, that just wasn’t enough.

So I moved on, trying different accounting roles, hoping to find something that truly excited me. But here’s the thing—I was never the “typical” accountant. I had too much personality, loved connecting with people, and wanted to do more than crunch numbers. That’s when a recruiter approached me about a job in recruiting—something completely outside my comfort zone. I almost didn’t take it because, let’s be real, I didn’t go to school for five years to NOT use my accounting degree. But I was young, didn’t have kids yet, and figured, why not?

That decision threw me into a whole new world. I spent my days placing accounting professionals in jobs, learning how different industries operated, and building relationships. It was fun, but I realized I didn’t just want to help other people find opportunities—I wanted to build something of my own.

So when I got the chance to go back into accounting, but this time in real estate, I took it. A week before I got laid off, I got a call about a Staff Accountant position at a startup property management company for single-family homes. At first, I wasn’t even going to take the interview, but something told me to go for it. That decision changed everything.

I was the first staff-level hire and had to build the entire team and processes from scratch. I did everything—hiring, setting up systems, operations, handling Section 8 and HOAs—you name it, I touched it. It was overwhelming, stressful, and a crash course in business, but I thrived in it.

Then life happened. I got pregnant, went on maternity leave, and came back to a completely different company after an acquisition. I wasn’t about to stick around for the unknown, so I left for another property management job—this time in construction. And let me tell you… boring is an understatement. So when my old boss called me with an opportunity to build another real estate startup (plus a huge raise), I took it.

Best. And worst. Decision. Ever.

I started as a Corporate Accounting Manager, got promoted to Property Accounting Manager, then Senior Property Accounting Manager, and eventually worked my way up to Controller. I wasn’t just crunching numbers—I was sitting in rooms with the CEO, COO, and CFO, explaining financials, analyzing trends, and helping shape the company’s financial strategy. I was leading teams, making high-level decisions, and proving that I belonged in those spaces.

Then, after five years of giving my all, the parent company took over and laid me off—after getting everything they could from me. But here’s the twist… I had already built something for myself.

While I was climbing the corporate ladder, I had started my own Airbnb business on the side. But I didn’t stop there.

Now, I’m still learning, growing, and figuring it out as I go—while helping as many people as I can do the same. And through it all, I have an amazing partner who supports me every step of the way.

So if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this—you don’t have to choose between success and family. You don’t have to follow the traditional path, either. You can build wealth, create opportunities, and design a life that aligns with what truly matters to you.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. The journey has been filled with challenges—some I expected, and others I never saw coming.

One of the biggest struggles was balancing motherhood while building my career. I spent years working long nights and early mornings, trying to climb the corporate ladder and create a better future for my family. But that grind came with a cost.

There were so many nights I missed with my son. Some days, I would leave for work before he even woke up and come home after he was already asleep. I remember sneaking into his room just to see him because that was the only time I had with him that day. I told myself I was doing it for him, but the guilt was heavy. I was constantly questioning, Am I making the right sacrifices?I dealt with racism, microaggressions, and constantly having to prove my worth in rooms where I was often the only one who looked like me. I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. I watched colleagues with less experience and less impact move up faster, simply because they fit the “leadership mold.” I had to fight for opportunities that were handed to others. After five years of pouring everything into that company, the parent company took over and let me go. It was a gut punch. I had done everything right. I had sacrificed time with my son, stayed late, led teams, and proved my value over and over again—only to be reminded that, at the end of the day, corporate will always do what’s best for them, not you.

But that moment, as painful as it was, became my turning point.

The struggles along the way taught me resilience. They taught me that no job, no title, no company defines my worth. I had been so focused on climbing someone else’s ladder that I didn’t realize I had the tools to build my own.
