Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Hutchings.
Hi Kim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story of Volo Lift really began long before we officially started the company in 2021. For years, we’ve been deeply rooted in the helicopter external load world through our training company, where we’ve had the privilege of teaching and mentoring hundreds of pilots across the globe. Watching those pilots go on to perform lift work with confidence and precision was incredibly rewarding — and it also inspired us to take the next step ourselves.
We decided to put our experience into action and create Volo Lift, a company built on decades of collective expertise in helicopter external load operations. Our goal was simple: to bring the same high standards of safety, skill, and precision we teach in the classroom to real-world lift work.
Today, Volo Lift performs helicopter lift jobs in construction, HVAC, cellular service, and just about any industry that needs a helicopter to get the job done. What truly sets us apart is our focus on precision construction work — a specialized area that many operators find challenging. For us, that challenge is where we thrive. Our team of seasoned pilots has completed lifts of every kind, and we take great pride in the accuracy and safety that define every mission.
Founding Volo Lift has been a natural extension of everything we’ve done before — blending our passion for aviation, our dedication to excellence, and our belief that with the right skill and mindset, you can quite literally lift almost anything.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is never smooth — and honestly, nothing ever seems to go exactly as planned, which in many ways just mirrors life in aviation. You learn to adapt, stay flexible, and keep moving forward no matter what comes your way.
One of the biggest challenges for us has been time — the time it takes to build a brand, earn a reputation, and get things fully off the ground. Even though we’re not new to this line of work, starting Volo Lift as a new business in a competitive area came with its own set of hurdles. Establishing trust and credibility takes patience and persistence, especially in such a specialized and safety-driven industry.
There’s also that barrier to entry that every new company faces. You know you have the experience, the skills, and the right people however, it still takes time for others to see that and for your work to speak for itself. For us, it’s been about showing up every day, doing the job right, and letting our results do the talking.
In the end, the road may be bumpy, but every challenge has strengthened our foundation. It’s all part of the journey.
We’ve been impressed with Volo Lift, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Volo Lift is a helicopter external load company specializing in precision lift work for construction, HVAC, cellular service, and other industries that require a helicopter to safely and efficiently get the job done. Established in 2021, Volo Lift was built on decades of hands-on experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to perform lift work the right way.
What truly sets us apart is our foundation in training and safety. As a sister company to our world renowned external load training organization, we’ve spent years teaching hundreds of pilots around the world how to perform lift work with skill, accuracy, and confidence. That same expertise and attention to detail are at the heart of everything we do at Volo Lift.
Our team of pilots brings decades of specialized experience to every project, whether it’s a complex construction lift, a rooftop HVAC placement, or a challenging cell tower job. We are known for our precision construction capabilities, a demanding niche in which success depends on flawless coordination, communication, and control. These are areas where our crews truly excel.
At Volo Lift, we take pride in delivering not just results, but trust and peace of mind. Clients know that when they choose us, they’re choosing a company that values safety, professionalism, and efficiency above all else. Every lift is treated with the same level of care, preparation, and precision no matter the size or scope of the job.
Brand-wise, we’re proud to represent a high standard in helicopter lift services, one where experience meets innovation, and where safety and performance always come first. We want people to know that when you see the Volo Lift name, it stands for excellence in external load operations and a commitment to helping our customers succeed in meeting their own customers expectation of excellence.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I believe the helicopter external load industry is going to play an increasingly vital role in infrastructure and construction. As environmental restrictions continue to tighten and access to certain sites becomes more limited, helicopters will become an even more critical solution for reaching areas where traditional cranes and heavy equipment simply can’t go.
Helicopter lift work offers a smaller environmental footprint, less ground disturbance, and faster completion times, all factors that align with the growing emphasis on efficiency. Whether it’s installing cell towers in remote locations, placing materials on rooftops in congested areas, or supporting renewable energy projects, the need for precision aerial lift solutions will only continue to grow.
We’re also likely to see advancements in technology and equipment, as well as enhanced safety and communication tools. These innovations will continue to make external load work efficient, precise, and safe.
