Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Strachan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I honestly got into photography on a whim during COVID. I was bored, bought a camera, and started taking pictures just to have something to do. I quickly realized I was actually pretty good at it, so I kept learning and pushing myself to get better.
Over the years I’ve photographed a little bit of everything, families, newborns, mini sessions, seniors, branding, you name it. Every type of session taught me something, but I eventually realized that weddings and pageant photography are what truly fill my cup. I love the excitement, the emotion, and getting to capture moments people will look back on for years to come.
Looking back, it’s crazy to think something that started because I was bored during COVID has grown into a business I’m so passionate about.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge has honestly been time. I still work full-time in education, so I’m constantly balancing my career with growing my photography business. There are so many ideas I have that I just haven’t had the time to implement yet.
I’ve also learned that being a great photographer doesn’t automatically make you a great business owner. Figuring out marketing, branding, pricing, and all the behind-the-scenes business stuff has been a learning curve. I’m still figuring some of it out, but I enjoy the challenge because every year I get a little better than the year before.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Kimberly Hughes Photography specializes in weddings and pageantry, but more than anything, I love telling people’s stories. Every wedding, title, and milestone represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and memories, and I get the privilege of preserving those moments.
I think what sets me apart is the relationships I build with my clients. I don’t want people to feel like they just hired a photographer. I want them to feel like they have someone in their corner who is just as excited about their success as they are.
My approach to editing is simple. I want people to look like the very best version of themselves. My goal isn’t to change who someone is, but to enhance what’s already there so they still look like themselves, just with a little extra polish and confidence.
I think my background in the Marine Corps and education has shaped the way I run my business. I’m organized, dependable, and calm under pressure. Weddings and pageants move fast, and I’ve learned how to anticipate moments before they happen while helping people feel confident and at ease.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite memories are the weekends I spent with my grandparents in San Diego. Life felt slower then, and I didn’t realize how special those ordinary days were until I got older. Those memories remind me why photographs matter so much. They become part of our family’s history long after the moment has passed.
