Inspiring Conversations with Kristin Williams of Wonderfully Made Nutrition Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Williams.

Kristin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became a registered dietitian specializing in the treatment of eating disorders due to my own personal struggle with disordered eating and body image concerns. I was always interested in the field of nutrition but, more than that, in the psychology of eating and understanding what drives individual food behaviors. I started out working in a clinical hospital setting and then later transitioned to providing general outpatient nutrition counseling. After gaining more education and experience in the field of eating disorders, I went on to work at two different treatment centers providing medical nutrition therapy at all levels of care including inpatient, residential and partial hospitalization. From there, I opened up my own Christ-centered private practice in 2017 and continue to help individuals heal their relationship with food and body using a non-diet, intuitive eating approach. I am passionate about helping teens and adults to experience freedom with eating and consider it an honor to walk alongside individuals in their recovery process.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! I remember, my first year as a dietitian, everyone telling me to keep an open mind and start by getting my feet wet in a hospital setting even though I had voiced a clear interest in eating disorders. I followed the recommendations of mentors and, after a year of “getting my feet wet,” I still remained passionate about working with eating disorders which is when I transitioned out of the hospital setting into outpatient care. I tell my dietetic interns all the time, that it can never hurt to apply for a job that interests you. I have applied, interviewed and been denied two different times in my career and, with both, later went on to interview again and was offered the job. Perseverance does pay off! I also tell interns all the time that passion, in my opinion, is more important than experience. You can always train someone to, with time, have experience. However, you cannot train someone to be passionate about the work that they are doing. For me, the training took time and the experience added up over the years, but the passion was always there and only grew stronger as I grew deeper in the field.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My name is Kristin Williams and I am a Registered Dietitian specialized in working with individuals with eating disorders, disordered eating, emotional eating and a history of chronic dieting.

I have found that the foundational component of properly nourishing yourself is to first make peace with food. This involves letting go of rigid food rules and the diet mentality and learning how to trust your own internal hunger and fullness cues. I believe that part of good nutrition is enjoying your food and finding satisfaction in eating. I also believe that black and white thinking around food can lead to disordered eating.

In my practice, I use a non-weight focused approach where I work with individuals on making healthy behavioral changes and letting their weight fall where it will while empowering clients to accept and embrace their unique bodies. Through my “all foods fit” motto, I assist individuals in incorporating intuitive eating into their every day life, help them to find types of movement that are both enjoyable and social and encourage them to embrace a Health at Every Size® concept.

In my book, Unworthy Weight, I address how to reclaim your worth from a number on a scale and find true identity in Christ. I am a Registered Dietitian licensed in the state of Texas and hold a degree in Nutritional Sciences from Texas A&M University. I completed my dietetic internship at Medical City Dallas Hospital and went on to become a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. This credential sets health professionals a part as clinicians who have met rigorous educational and skill requirements, have accumulated a minimum number of hours of qualifying work experience, have made a commitment to stay abreast of current development through the field through continuing education and have agreed to comply with the Association’s ethical principles.

I have experience working in both the inpatient as well as outpatient hospital setting providing Medical Nutrition Therapy and outpatient nutrition counseling. I specialize in treating individuals with eating disorders and have previously worked at Eating Recovery Center, a world renown eating disorder treatment facility, working with individuals in the inpatient, residential and partial hospitalization program.

I am currently a member of the International Federation of Eating Disorder Dietitians and previously served on the board of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals DFW Chapter.

I have presented as a guest speaker at multiple events including the Annual Professional Seminar for Area Dietetic Students and Interns, Baylor Scott and White Medical Center Bariatric Support Group, Cancer Survivorship Support Group, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Center, Cooking Well with Diabetes, West Mesquite High School Girls’ Club, Medical City Dallas Hospital Dietetic Internship Class, Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, Dallas Dietetic Alliance, Irving Bible Church Women’s Ministry and Camp War Eagle.

I founded the In His Image Body Image Conference for Young Teens and Women and have had the opportunity of co-leading a body image recovery group as part of the Recovery for Life Ministries.

What matters most to you?
My Christian faith is the foundation of who I am and impacts every part of what I do. I provide nutrition counseling using a faith-based lens for individuals who voice the Christian faith as a value of theirs. I consider this to be one of the most rewarding parts of my job as I work with clients to reclaim their worth from a number on the scale and find true identity in Christ.
