Krupa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Denton Cigar Co. began in 2020, inspired by my husband Gaurang Patel’s passion for cigars and his experience running a cigar accessories company, Visol, for over 25 years. We found the perfect spot in Denton—away from the busy city—and decided to open a cigar lounge there.
We completely remodeled an old cigar shop, turning it into a warm, welcoming space where people could relax and connect. We started hosting cigar events, which helped create a strong sense of community. People came together over their shared love of cigars and bourbon, and many friendships were formed.
We opened our doors in March 2020—but after just one week, we had to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the setback, my husband and I kept the business going. Once restrictions were lifted, more people started coming in, especially those working from home who were looking for a break and some social time.
Our lounge quickly became a relaxing hangout spot for cigar lovers. We focused on giving every customer a great experience from the moment they walked in, and that made a big difference.
After two years, we faced another challenge: our building was taken by the city for the I-35 highway expansion. But we didn’t give up. We renovated the building next door and moved the lounge there without missing a beat.
Denton Cigar Co. has overcome a lot, thanks to the amazing support of our local community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We worked hard to remodel the building and within a week of it being open we had to close because of Covid. It was devastating for the morale. We kept business open by providing curbside pickup during Covid. When we reopened in May business did very well.
But then, about two years after we first opened, we faced another big problem. The building we had put so much work into was taken by the government. They needed the land to make the I35 highway bigger. We had to move!
We acted fast. We found the building right next door, fixed it up quickly, and moved Denton Cigar Co. there. We tried to make the move as smooth as possible for everyone.
It’s been quite a journey with some big challenges, like COVID and losing our first building. But Denton Cigar Co. has made it through, thanks to the amazing support from our local community here in Denton. We’re so grateful for that!
