Inspiring Conversations with Lakisha Walton of K-Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakisha Walton.

Lakisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into design started long before I ever called it a business. In high school, I discovered a love for graphic design and spent countless hours teaching myself the tools available at the time, like CorelDRAW and Microsoft Publisher. I was always curious, always learning, and I quickly realized that design wasn’t just something I enjoyed—it was something I was meant to do.

Years later, that passion turned into purpose when I became a work-from-home mom looking for a way to earn income while doing what I loved. I was completely self-taught, relying on experimentation, late nights of learning, and a deep desire to grow. What began as small projects quickly turned into consistent work as clients started referring me through word of mouth. One project led to another, and before I knew it, a business was forming.

That business became K-Designs, which I founded in 2006. Now, nearly 20 years later, I’ve had the privilege of serving countless small business owners, churches, and organizations—both across the Metroplex and beyond state lines. Over time, my work has expanded from graphic design into branding, website design, and digital strategy, always with a focus on helping clients show up with confidence and clarity online.

Alongside running my business, I’m also a graphic design educator, which keeps me rooted in learning and growth. I’m still doing what I’ve always done—learning new tools, improving my skills, and staying curious. The difference now is that I get to use that knowledge to empower others.

My story isn’t about overnight success. It’s about persistence, passion, and trusting the process. From a self-taught student with a love for design, to a work-from-home mom building something meaningful, to a business owner still learning and improving after two decades—I’m grateful to still be doing what I love every single day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. The road has been anything but smooth. Like many creatives and entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of challenges along the way. Early on, imposter syndrome was a constant struggle—questioning whether I was truly “good enough,” especially as a self-taught designer working alongside formally trained professionals. Even with experience and results, learning to trust my skills took time.

Another major challenge was scope creep. In the early years, I said yes to too much—extra revisions, added requests, and last-minute changes—often without proper boundaries or compensation. I wanted to serve my clients well, but I hadn’t yet learned how to protect my time, energy, or business.

Perhaps the biggest lesson has been learning how to value my worth. Pricing my services confidently didn’t come naturally at first. It required unlearning the idea that being grateful for work meant undercharging, and instead understanding that experience, expertise, and results have real value. That mindset shift didn’t happen overnight—it came through trial, reflection, and growth.

Every struggle has shaped how I operate today. Those challenges taught me the importance of confidence, clear communication, and boundaries—not just in business, but in life. They didn’t stop me; they refined me, and they continue to influence how I show up for my clients and my work.

We’ve been impressed with K-Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
K-Designs is a creative studio focused on helping small businesses, churches, and organizations build a strong, confident online presence. I specialize in branding, website design and development, website audits, and ongoing design and maintenance support. At the core of everything I do is strategy—design that isn’t just visually appealing, but intentional, functional, and aligned with real goals.

What sets K-Designs apart is the combination of experience, education, and empathy. With nearly 20 years in business, I understand both the creative side and the practical side of running a business. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every client comes with different needs, budgets, and levels of experience, and my approach is always to meet them where they are and help them move forward with clarity.

I’m also known for breaking down complex ideas—like websites, branding, and digital visibility—into simple, manageable steps. As both a designer and an educator, I take pride in empowering my clients, not intimidating them. Whether it’s a full website build, a strategic audit, or a focused VIP Design Day, my goal is to help clients feel confident, informed, and proud of what they’re putting into the world.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust K-Designs has built over the years. Many of my clients come through referrals, repeat work, or long-term relationships, and that means everything to me. The brand represents consistency, growth, and integrity—showing up, doing excellent work, and continuing to evolve.

What I want readers to know most is that K-Designs isn’t just about design—it’s about helping people show up boldly and professionally in spaces where they once felt unsure. Whether someone is just starting out or ready to refine and elevate what they already have, my work is rooted in helping them see their value and communicate it clearly.

How do you think about happiness?
What truly makes me happy is helping people. I genuinely have a heart to serve, and that shows up in everything I do. It’s not enough for me to simply complete a project—I want my clients to walk away with understanding and confidence. I take joy in teaching, explaining, and empowering people so they don’t feel dependent or intimidated, but informed and capable.

It makes me especially happy when a client realizes they understand something they once felt overwhelmed by—whether that’s their website, their brand, or their next steps. Seeing that shift from uncertainty to confidence is incredibly rewarding.

Above all, I’m grateful to use my God-given talent to help others. Design isn’t just a skill for me; it’s a way to serve, encourage, and support people in meaningful ways. Being able to use what I love to uplift others is what keeps me motivated and fulfilled.
