Inspiring Conversations with Mike Bean of Mike Bean Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Bean.

Hi Mike , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in the Lewisville and Flower Mound area. After High School I joined the military and left the area. After my time in service, I landed in the Nashville, TN area and worked in the corporate world. I worked for a large corporation for over 15 years and had a successful career. While working for that company and living on the greater Nashville area we had a massive tornado hit that killed approximately 23 people and destroyed everything in it patch for about 60 miles. After the tornado hit, I was working in the areas impacted, speaking with a lot of the people that had lost everything. Many of them in my conversations told me that their insurance they had on their property was inadequate to cover the loss so that they could rebuild and try to put their lives back together. I knew nothing about insurance at the time. I felt compelled to do something. I always wanted to own my own business and take what I had learned from my career and apply it to something I built. I have always also had a strong compassion for helping others in my community. I started asking questions of people I knew in the insurance industry on how I could help those impacted by the storm. While talking with people I was approached about opening my own agency. I felt a calling to go down that path. I maintained my current career and at night worked on the process to achieve the requirements needed to start my agency with State Farm. After 2 years of work, I left my career. I started looking at locations with opportunities to open an office. My main objective when looking at a location was that I wanted to be in a town that I truly cared about and that I could be involved with the community. The opportunity here in Flower Mound opened, it was an easy decision. I grew up here and loved the area. Also, I have 3 little boys, I knew that this area would be a great place for them to grow up. Since opening my agency, I have been heavily involved in the community. I am able to help my local customers and I am able to engage in many community projects. I am involved with LISD as a member of the Superintendent’s Key Communicators committee, I was interviewed for a promotional video for the LISD website, I am a major sponsor and supporter of numerous LISD Marcus High School teams giving back to our next generation, I have served on several Town of Flower Mound Board and Commissions. I am currently the Chair of the Board of Adjustment. I am on the Board of Directors for the Flower Mound Youth Football League. I am involved in serval other community events and organizations. Since opening my agency, we have grown and been able to help thousands of families within our community. We have been voted as Best of Denton County in several categories for a few years in a roll.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to starting a business is never easy. There is a lot of risk, a lot of sacrifices, and it takes a lot of dedication. Some think that they are going to start a business and once they are the boss they will sit back and be on easy street. It doesn’t work that way. It takes hard work. You must have a solid plan and stick with it. When I left my corporate career, I left a comfortable income with security. I put everything I had into getting my agency off the ground. We depleted all of our investments and savings. Financially it is a huge struggle to start your own business. There are a lot of expenses that you don’t realize until you are in it. I didn’t collect any income for the first two years. In addition to the financial struggles the biggest lesson is that you cannot do it alone. You must surround yourself with the right people. Without a strong team that can see your vision and is willing to follow you towards the goals, you will not be successful. Most small businesses that start fail in the first five years because the owner thinks they need to do everything or can’t impower others to do what they need to do. One person can’t do it all. Having a great team is the biggest key. Another obstacle is being able to build relationships with as many people as possible. Relationships are vital to a small business. You have to treat people the right way to build trust. That is the foundation that long-term success is built on.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mike Bean Agency ?
I am a local insurance Agent. I am a Veteran. We are an agency that puts a huge commitment on serving our local community and providing an experience that feels more like a trusted family friend that just a salesman. When we interact with our customers, we provide a higher level of education and advisement so that they can make an educated decision on what they need. You can read through our reviews and the biggest theme you will see is that after our we set up a new customer that they walked away with a lot of information that they didn’t have before, they feel that we took the time to break everything down for them instead of just talking to them about a price. We are proud of the reputation that we have built as the local agent that is involved in the community and works constantly to make our community better for everyone. We have been voted as the Best of Denton county several times because our community knows that they can trust us and rely on us when the unexpected happens. We help people protect what is important to them and set up financial services to protect their future. We also specialize in being the premier motorcycle agent in DFW. I have been in the motorcycle culture in DFW for over 2 decades. I understand the passion that people have for their motorcycle.

How do you think about happiness?
My family and helping others make me happy. I am called to serve. Everyday I live with the mindset that I always look for ways I can help others. That may be helping my wife and kids or a random person in the community. Seeing the smile on someone’s face or a sense of relief when you step up and helping someone gives me joy. My wife tells me I have a “Hero complex” that I am always trying to save the world. From something simple like opening a door for someone or several months ago when I did CPR to a two-month-old baby in the middle of the road after stopping to help a stranger that was pulled over and looked like she was in a panic. I feel there is no greater joy that being able to help others.
