Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Moss.
Hi Mike, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in construction when I was in High School working on rental properties for a gentleman in my small town, where I learned the hands-on approach to getting it done. I worked all through high school and college, where I finished my entrepreneurial management degree at TCU in Ft. Worth. Right out of college, I moved to Austin, where I started as a project manager building production homes. After that, I moved on to custom home construction and “build on your lot” construction for an exciting change of pace. My time as a project manager in custom home construction quickly transitioned into a management role going from an area manager to the VP of construction in a two-year stretch. I lead a team of about 25 project managers, architects and designers before moving back to DFW in 2011 to take a position with a fast-growing company that needed some leadership to get to the next level. After about five years there, we grew from 5 people to over 70 in two markets, and I felt like it was a good time for me to venture out on my own which is when I started Ornata Residential. We have specialized in high-end remodels/additions and new home construction and are continuing to grow our team and our footprint in Dallas.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is never a smooth road and there are always struggles as you start a new business regardless of your education or past business dealings. One can never quite understand the full scope of challenges faced when starting a company until you dive in and do it yourself. One thing I quickly realized is how fortunate I had been in my previous work experience to be surrounded by great people who are experts in their respected field. When I had to do everything from sales, estimating, accounting and construction myself, I found out how “the shoe” fit real quick until I could start building our Ornata Team. When we run into challenges, we try to address them quickly and when necessary, we put a process, a system, or a person in place that could better handle those issues.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a residential home builder/remodeler servicing a discerning clientele in the Park Cities and Dallas area. We work with a team of architects and designers that help us to facilitate our client’s needs from concept to completion. We truly believe in building clients for life. The lion’s share of our work comes from repeat and referral clients, which is a real honor when we build a home and years later come back to update/remodel the spaces.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
As a serial learner and generally inquisitive person, I always love talking with our clients, who are often business owners or professionals in their respective fields and learning more about their work experiences, challenges, and how they made it to where they are now. Though they may be in differing industries, I feel that has been a great resource for me to learn from some amazing people. Specifically, I would credit Mark Nunnely and Rogers Healy for being huge advocates of ours and moral support for me in the early days of Ornata Residential when the days were long and the road was uphill both ways. Today I am fortunate to have friends in a variety of industries that really help me to get an outside perspective on construction-specific challenges. One friend, Tracey Maynor with W&B Services, has been just such a person to help provide an outside perspective since his business is a trucking and ours is construction, yet I find it amazing how looking through a different lens will give you a new perspective on the things in front of you.
