Inspiring Conversations with Miosotis Lopez of Miolooks Salon Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miosotis Lopez.

Hi Miosotis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and from a very young age I was drawn to the beauty industry. Growing up, I struggled with self-esteem, and salon visits weren’t something my family could afford. I remember dreaming about what it would feel like to sit in a chair and finally feel beautiful like in the movies.

On my Quinceañera, I experienced professional hair and makeup for the first time. Instead of feeling confident, I left feeling disappointed. The work wasn’t done well, and that moment stayed with me. It became the reason I chose this career. I promised myself I would never allow someone to feel unseen or uncomfortable in my chair.

In 2005, I attended beauty school in Puerto Rico. At the time, my mother didn’t support the decision she wanted stability and a better career option for me. But I had a mentor who believed in my work, and I stayed committed. Over time, as my career grew, my mother became one of my biggest supporters.

My journey hasn’t been linear. After moving from Puerto Rico to Florida in 2012, and later to Massachusetts, I rebuilt my cosmetology license multiple times. When I arrived in Massachusetts, I didn’t speak English, but I was given an opportunity because my work spoke for itself. A salon manager believed in me and supported me while I learned the language. That experience shaped the way I lead and work today.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve built my career through consistency, advanced education, and intention. I’m very focused on the client experience, on craftsmanship, and on creating work that feels elevated but still personal.

Today, I’m the owner of Miolooks Salon Studio in Southlake, Texas, where I work as a hairstylist, makeup artist, and educator. My work has received international recognition, including Editorial Makeup of the Year at the One Shot Hair Awards in 2023. I truly believe that one of the biggest factors that had helped me to be where I’m today is the investment I have done for the past 5 years in continuing education, I have dedicated myself to take at least 2-3 classes a year either for hair color techniques, haircuts or makeup.

Everything I do is rooted in that original promise to create beauty with intention and to help people feel confident, seen, and valued.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road.

One of the biggest challenges in my journey was stepping away from my career in 2014 to raise my daughter. For six years, I chose to be fully present as a mother because I wanted to be the one taking care of her at all times, it was hard for me to leave her with others. During that time, returning to the industry wasn’t an option, and honestly, I believed my career might be over. The beauty industry moves fast, and I worried that I was falling behind. But even then, the passion for my craft never left.

In March of 2020, at the very beginning of the COVID pandemic, I returned to work in a salon and began rebuilding from the ground up. I felt out of practice. The techniques had evolved, trends had changed, and my confidence was at its lowest but my determination was stronger than my fear. I committed myself to learning again, to showing up consistently, and to trusting the process.

In 2021, I experienced one of the hardest moments of my life when I lost my mother unexpectedly to COVID. That loss became a turning point. It reminded me that time isn’t guaranteed, and that waiting for the ‘right moment’ can cost you everything.

Just a few months later, while still grieving, I made the decision to leave the salon I was working at and open my studio. I had a small, growing clientele, and I was restricted by a non-compete that prevented me from reaching out to them but I moved forward anyway. Opening my business during grief was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was also an act of faith, discipline, and courage.

During that season, my work became both my purpose and my healing. I focused on creating a space where people could feel confident, cared for, and truly seen. That period reshaped me not just as a business owner, but as a woman, an artist, and a leader.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
