Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabreeyah Hackett
Hi Sabreeyah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since young, hair was always something I naturally gravitated towards. I created my own products and gel just to take care of my own strands. Once I was a junior in high school, my mom walked upon a salon located in Lancaster TX named, Eyat’s Naturals. This is where my passion for hair was found. For five years, I dedicated myself to growing & learning my craft head after head. My life & upbringing has always been a rollercoaster. In times where I had nothing else to depend on, I had hair. Hair became my safe haven as a young woman. The repetition of it allowed my mind to clear itself and find reassurance in the present. The thought of my potential is what kept me going through anything. After attending Howard & Prairie View University, I dropped out of college to pursue my dreams. I then enrolled in cosmetology school & started my own business within The Slay Lounge. I took the leap for my mental health. Nothing felt right until I fully pursued my dreams. Now currently, I am a Licensed Cosmetologist & successful business owner of Dose of Melanin: A Safe Space. Just as hair proved me a safe space, I made it my mission to provide that exact space to others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was everything but smooth. When no one else believed or saw the vision I had, I did question myself. I questioned if leaving school was right. I questioned my capabilities. I even questioned God as to why my passion had to be connected to something so uncertain. Of course, it would be so much easier to take the route that society has paved for us. However, my mind, body, and soul called me to hair. I had a vision I could not shake. Listening to those around me kept me in school, pursing something I knew wasn’t truly me. Something that did not fulfill me like hair did. Unfortunately, this lead to thoughts of suicide and deep depression. Taking the leap, was to pursue my dreams of course, but to save myself.
We’ve been impressed with Dose of Melanin: A Safe Space , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Dose of Melanin, we specialize in natural hair & Locs. This is a safe space for all. I pride myself in my clients comfort. This is where you find peace and even get some rest. I offer a space for transparency. A space where feeling emotions and being vulnerable is not denied but encouraged. After experiencing service at Dose of Melanin, all clients should feel rejuvenated mentally. We pride ourselves in all natural & professional product usage. We also use little to no gel for loc maintenance. I truly care about the growth of hair, not just the styling of hair. As a Licensed Professional, it is my duty to grow hair, not damage it.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see community for Dose of Melanin. In all aspects. Whether it’s in the film and production industry, or me behind my chair. I see love, celebration, and community for my business. Anywhere God takes me, I know I have the love and support of the community I am shaping.
