Hi Sara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Cupcake Polish was born from a lifelong love of nail polish and a desire to create something simple, fun, and effortlessly stunning. Growing up, I was obsessed with nail polish – I can still remember sneaking into my mom’s bathroom to paint my toes multiple times a week. In college, regular salon visits weren’t in my budget, so painting my own nails became both a creative outlet and a therapeutic ritual. Around that time, Instagram was beginning to take off, and I was captivated by all the incredible nail art I saw online. The only problem? I didn’t have the artistic skills to recreate it myself. So instead, I set out to make polishes so striking with special effects that they didn’t need any nail art at all.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Over the past 12 years, building Cupcake Polish has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it hasn’t come without challenges.
One of the most challenging moments came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many small businesses, we faced uncertainty overnight. Sourcing raw materials became increasingly difficult as global supply chains were disrupted, leading to production delays. Despite these challenges, I was determined to keep Cupcake Polish going. I focused on adapting by streamlining operations, finding creative solutions for packaging and ingredients, and communicating openly with customers who supported us through every delay. That period tested every part of the business, but it also reinforced the strength and loyalty of the indie polish community.
Another ongoing challenge has been scaling the business. Growing from a small, handmade operation into a thriving brand has required constant innovation and reinvention. As demand increased, I had to balance maintaining the artisanal quality that defines Cupcake Polish with the need for greater efficiency and production capacity. It meant learning new systems, building partnerships, and trusting others with parts of the process I once handled myself. Scaling hasn’t been easy, but it has pushed me to evolve as both a business owner and a creator, and it’s what has allowed Cupcake Polish to reach more people while staying true to its handmade roots.
