Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Owning a small business was never something that I thought I could do. It was something WAY out of reach for me, mentally and emotionally. I started out with a degree in Health and worked in an office setting. Then in 2015, I resigned to become a stay-at-home mom. In 2019 I was inspired to follow my not so little dream of opening a boutique in a cute downtown square – DENTON, TX. Flash forward to 2022, I’m now divorced with a 7-year-old and honestly the happiest I’ve ever been. I have a job I love and am vsurrounded by the most supportive people. Owning a small business has been VERY stressful and VERY rewarding. I have learned so much about myself, gained confidence in myself and confidence in my dreams – that they are worth it! AND I even made it through COVID! My boutique Rose & Thorn Clothing Co is literally an extension of my closet and personal style. Everything is hand-picked and photographed in-house. Our goal at Rose & Thorn is to create an atmosphere where you are shopping with your most stylish hype-you-up friend, instead of a salesperson. We want to provide the best customer service and quality apparel at all times. We truly care about the way our clothing makes you feel, and we want you to come back wanting more!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
COVID played the biggest obstacle. The Denton Square lost a lot of traffic, and it is still not back up from 2019. One way I tried to improve that was through re-creating a wine event that took place on the square pre covid. The event is called the Denton Wine Tasting Tour and is always hosted by Rose & Thorn Clothing Co. It’s held every 3 months on the last Wednesday of the month. Stores in and close to the square sign up to serve wine to the patrons as they walk the square and see how great Denton truly is. Our first event was in October, and we got so much great feedback from the community and businesses. Not to mention our sales on a Wednesday night were INSANE! Other than that, we have been focusing on staying consistent on social media and showcasing new styles, and making reels/TikToks. I am also very active in the Mainstreet Association for Denton – they produce some great events as well that bring awareness to the stores on the square. I really don’t think owning a business has ever been a smooth road – life isn’t even a smooth road, but it’s worth it!

Rose & Thorn Clothing Co. started with Sarah Bennett’s dream and a few loyal family investors. Always looking for the newest trends for both women and men, Sarah went all in November of 2019 by opening a storefront in Downtown Denton, TX, and simultaneously an online shop.
The store is named after her mother, Rose Mary, and her daughter, Avery Rose. The “thorn” in the name is meant to represent the masculine touch of the store – we sell men’s clothing! Crazy right?!?
Sarah is incredibly passionate about all people finding clothing that makes them feel good, so it was an obvious choice to include all genders within her store and online shop. Offering male, female and unisex apparel is what sets Rose & Thorn apart from most boutiques but that’s not the only thing that makes us different! We spend ample time studying upcoming trends, sourcing garments, and curating quality collections for our customers.
