Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelyna Tinglin.
Hi Shelyna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had a love for Real Estate. I was licensed back home in Brooklyn, New York, but didn’t actively pursue it as I was focused on non-profits and teaching. Instead of being a full time Realtor I focused 15 years in the classroom as an educator and ran a 501(c) 3 focused on community and building family engagement. My love for Real Estate never subsided, and even from the classroom I was consulting families on their next and best Real Estate move, working to procure HUD and abandoned homes for the non-profit. I got licensed in 2015 while I was still teaching and had serious ambitions of going full time, but like many I was struck with the fear bug. I was terrified to leave the classroom because that was all I knew. So for two years I focused on teaching at 100% wearing many hats in various roles, and 100% as a Realtor helping families buy and sell well into the midnight hours. Seriously, there were days I didn’t get home from showings until after 11:00PM, then sat up to write contracts. All while being a wife and mom to three children. That was not sustainable and I ended up in the hospital. One thing my doctor said when she walked into the room was, “you’re replaceable”. That was BOLD of her to say, but it was the truth. I was pushing so hard I’d stressed myself out to the point of being hospitalized. I didn’t realize the toll being 100% in both careers was taking on my body. If I didn’t make it out of that hospital the school would get a new teacher, my clients would get a new Realtor and eventually my family would move on. So after that second year I decided to dedicate everything to Real Estate. One thing about a teacher… you can take us out of the classroom, but you can’t stop us from teaching. So naturally after two years into Real Estate I begin to train other agents. Within three years I began teaching various topics top Realtors and coaching. Now I’m a certified mentor (among other designations), coach, business consultant and trainer. I’m obsessed with seeing agents grow into their own version of success, so I’ve built out dual career programs for those that want to transition but don’t know how. I mentor agents through their transactions from appointment to post close, and train them on how to build relationships because that’s ultimately what this business is about and how you last. I stay relevant in Real Estate by continuing to service my referral clients as it’s important to me to stay updated on what’s happening on a local and national level in our industry and I can best do that by being hands on. Behind every one of my coaching clients you will see me cheering them on, fighting for them to win, and jumping in a transaction to have their back when I need too!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle along the way has been managing my desire to want to do it all which included managing my time! I want everyone to experience successes at such high levels that I used to take on more than I should and not understand that NO was a complete sentence. I did more for my coaching and real estate clients than anyone else would. I’d often get asked by other Realtors and Coaches why I did so much and I always wondered why they didn’t do more! Learning to leverage and let go of the time suckers was a huge shift for me. Time suckers are the ones that want to be coached, want to be held accountable but also want to take no action. I’ve learned how to identify these individuals and gently off board them from my program. Learning that I have office hours was a shocker to say the least. I thought I was never allowed to not answer my phone. Big lie! Just as corporate employees have times that they are off and they log out from work, so did I. This was a massive obstacle for me to overcome, learning when not to take the call or respond to an email/text. Once I figured this out I was able to take back my time, and mental health.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My organization was designed with the Realtor in mind. Whether we believe it or not, we need a coach & advocate in our business, and other aspects of our lives for that matter. I take agents at every phase of their business and partner with them to level up. That means we discover their strengths and capitalize on them, review their struggles and leverage all them while using both to achieve whatever accomplishment they’ve set for themselves and business. Every agent is different, and has different needs, so coaching to a one size fits all from a book doesn’t work for everyone. My organization was built to meet those varying needs of each agent and teach them how to capitalize on every opportunity. That could be calling strangers or hosting events for their community. There are often times we need to address their mindset and emotional well-being before they can even begin to see their growth potential. This isn’t a one size fits all program, and you will see agents that have full time jobs who’ve made more in six months selling Real Estate than they have at their corporate jobs. You’ll see agents shifting out of Real Estate to other roles such as showing assistants or transaction coordinators. We even have agents growing beyond their capacity and building teams. I’ve designed my programs to be hands on, in person or virtually. We focus on shadowing opportunities to watch the pros, mastermind sessions to dive deeper into various Real Estate content and making sure someone is there to walk with them, not judge or lead from opinion, but to guide with logic and facts. Lastly we save time for fun by team building with other agents in the organization once a month.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was watching my grandmother teach. I used to line my dolls and teddy bears up as my students and teach them lessons. Now don’t ask me what those lessons were, but I can tell you my students never complained. My grandmother was truly the inspiration that lead me to the classroom, and leading with a servant’s heart. It was through watching her as a child that I learned to put God first, family second and everything else falls after. In those lessons I’d watch her teach I picked up right away that a leader is a servant first, and must always come from contribution and care if you expect anyone to follow you.
