Sophia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have worked in the apparel industry for 10 + years in product development and wholesale fashion buying for various companies. In 2018, I leaped and moved to Dubai, United Arab Emirates to explore new life, culture, and travel. While residing in the UAE, I had an opportunity to author a fashion merchandising curriculum for high school students. This curriculum gave Emirati nationals and expat students an avenue to explore creativity in a new way and introduce the fashion industry as a viable career option. These were the most rewarding years of my career. An international collaboration with SCAD Atlanta influenced interest in the fields of art and design among many of my students. I can proudly say have students today across the world who are successfully studying fashion design, interior design, and architecture. 

In 2019, my womenswear brand, Category London, was incubated in Dubai. The brand offers an assortment to suit the diversity of a metro lifestyle. We cater to those with a flexible sense of style or those looking for something more specific. As a brand, we strive to offer positive messaging and imaging of authentic individuality. We exude “good fashion, good vibes” at every point of contact, empowering authentic individuality, personal evolution, and positivity from the inside out. 

Born and cultivated amidst the vibrant fashion landscape of Dubai, Category London is now set to debut triumphantly in Dallas, marking a proud homecoming for our brand. Along our journey, I’ve been deeply honored to see us grace the pages of prestigious publications such as Cosmopolitan Middle East, New York Live, and Huffington Post, garnering recognition for delivering unparalleled style and quality. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As the owner of Category London, I must say that our journey has been a blend of exhilarating highs and challenging lows. While our passion for fashion and dedication to quality has been unwavering, we have faced our fair share of obstacles along the way. As a brand incubated in Dubai and now expanding to Dallas, we had to overcome logistical hurdles and adapt to different market dynamics. Building a presence in two distinct regions requires strategic planning and a deep understanding of local preferences and consumer behaviors. Despite these obstacles, I am incredibly proud of how far the brand has come. I am particularly thrilled about catering to our clients in the United States.

Category London is a fashion brand offering positive messaging and imaging of authentic individuality. The brand is witty, lively, free-spirited, charming, and has an amusing sophistication. We exude “good fashion, good vibes” at every point of contact, empowering authentic individuality, personal evolution, and positivity from the inside out. Category London’s main goal is to continue to raise our good vibes to new heights by executing a customer-centric business model with unique digital and in-person shopping experiences. We also aim to nuture a community of fashion enthusiasts that are passionate about expressing their authenticity. 

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a creative kid, always lost in the world of art and drawing, exploring every color in the crayon box. But my grandmother’s closet was an early fascination. I remember the perception I had of her closet as a young girl; it always seemed so grand and filled with magic. Watching her and my mother get ready was my favorite thing. I’d hover nearby, mesmerized by the way they effortlessly put together outfits, choosing just the right clothes, shoes, and jewelry. 

Once I graduated, I explored my sense of style and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, I developed a growing appreciation for authenticity, realizing that true style isn’t just about following trends but about embracing what makes me unique. Wearing an outfit that truly reflects my style is one of my favorite feelings. I dedicate my business models to inspire and celebrate individuality, encouraging my clients to embrace their unique sense of style.
