Hi Susan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always drawn to taking pictures and capturing fleeting moments in time. Once my daughter was born just over eleven years ago, I decided to start Susan Baraban Photography to specialize in lifestyle newborn photography. I was stunned by just how fast babies grow and became obsessed with trying to capture every tiny detail. Once those seemingly never-ending newborn hazy days ended, I wanted to be able to look back at the images and remember her tiny toes and how chubby her little cheeks were.
I love how lifestyle photography is laid back and natural, focusing more on connections than stiff posing. Although I am always sure to get a few ‘everyone smile at the camera’ shots, I prefer candid images that show emotion. The majority of the photos I take are of the family adoring their new baby and interacting with each other or even playing some games if toddlers are involved. Often times my favorite images are the in-between moments.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today in my business has not been a smooth one. There is quite a learning curve to running a business, and I was slightly unaware how much of my time would be spent on other things besides taking the actual photos! Also, I established my business in NYC and was grateful to have a steady stream of clients there. Then I moved to the Dallas area, and I had to essentially start all over again. Fast forward a few years, and I am happy to have amazing clients in the DFW Metroplex. The majority of my business is based on client referrals, so I am incredibly grateful for their continued support and kind words.

I specialize in newborn, maternity, and family lifestyle photography. I love being chosen to capture such important milestones in my client’s lives, the most impactful of which is welcoming a brand-new baby! For newborn sessions, I travel to my client’s home where they are most comfortable and relaxed. It is there that I use natural light to capture timeless, authentic moments they will cherish for years to come.
Every home I go into has a different personal style and decor and even more different lighting, which keeps me on my toes and makes every single session unique to that particular family. Despite these variables, I strive to deliver beautiful galleries to each and every family by being flexible and very creative. I especially love it when I get the opportunity to use something unique about my client’s home in their imagery.
Although I do end each newborn session with the adorable basket images, during the bulk of my in-home lifestyle newborn sessions, the baby is in his or her parent’s arms, the place they love to be the most.
