Our story began when Kendall & Martrel began working for the previous owner. That owner decided to relocate. In late December 2020, we learned that the space was available for lease, and we put in a bid and subsequently got the space in January 2021.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The challenges we’ve faced have been, of course, starting a business during the COVID-19 Pandemic and rebranding the location. Everyone was hit hard by the pandemic from every angle; economically, socially, and globally. We knew we had to be sensitive to our customers who were facing their own challenges. However, we want people to know that our goal is to provide an all new experience and that the quality is top tier. Now that we are Winners Smokehouse, we want to bring excellence every time!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Winners Smokehouse?
We are Winners Smokehouse-a family-owned black business. We specialize in Texas style BBQ. Of all of our menu items, we are most known for our huge MVP baked potatoes. They come fully loaded with all of the basic fixings and any meat of your choice! What sets us apart from others is that integrity is number one with our food. When you eat Winners Smokehouse, it’s going to be made that day fresh off the grill! We are most proud of the fact that we have been featured on a few local food blogs on Instagram and Twitter. It shows that our food speaks for itself! We want your reader to know that Winners Smokehouse is the real deal! We may be a small business, but have a lot of heart and all of our food is made with love right down the banana pudding!
We offer catering services for all types of events, and our restaurant is available for rent for large gatherings. For those services, we can be reached via our email.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
What is surprising is that I (Ken) personally never saw myself as a business owner/operator. After retiring from the United States Army after serving 27 + years, I’ve served and worked in various other capacities including teaching, community service, leadership roles, as well as an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. I’ve worked in so many areas, but not that of business ownership! There aren’t very many surprises because despite our many personalities our family works well together. Working with family can be difficult, but we have a genuine love, like, and respect for one another. We know when to change from the business hat to the family hat. We all showcase our skills and talents in different yet important roles in the business. Kendall and Martrel each established themselves as assets to the BBQ restaurant business. They both perform their duties very well and always in the best interest of our customers. Kendall serves in both marketing and customer service, while Martrel contributes his many years of experience in the food-service and bartending industry as the Pit Master/Head Chef. Regina (mom) utilizes her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management to keep all of our business operational needs functioning properly. Ken (Dad) serves as the support staff and welcoming co-owner who invites people from all walks of life to come out and enjoy some of the very best BBQ in the Cedar Hill/DFW area.
