Yahaira, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Bonita Balloons Co. started in 2020 from helping a friend decorate her sister’s gender reveal. Seeing how a simple balloon garland made such beautiful memories for someone’s event made me want to begin and providing that to everyone! As the years have gone we have grown so much. When we started, we operated from my bedroom and my closet was my storage haha. Now we have our very own Bonita Balloons Co. office that my dad built for us which allows us to have such a bigger space for all our setups, storage and much more! This year has been our busiest year yet and I could not have done any of this without the support of my parents, family, nieces and friends. It is more than just balloons for us. It is about creating memories one balloon at a time and making it stress free for our clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not been an easy ride. As with any other business everything comes with challenges. When I started Bonita Balloons Co. I had just graduated with my bachelors degree and was pursuing my Masters Degree, while also balancing a new career. My time was very limited but I knew I wanted to take the leap of faith in my balloon business. As we continue to grow I know we will face different challenges along the way but we are looking forward to unfolding new ways to overcome them. One thing that I encourage other inspiring balloon artist is to not let the obstacles or challenges define their work but to use those obstacles and challenges to become better and grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Bonita Balloons Co. is a Latina owned business serving the DFW and Ellis County area. I am the only person who runs the business with of course the help of my parents behind the scenes. We specialize in Balloon Garlands, Balloon Bouquets, wooden backdrop rentals, neon sign rentals and shimmer wall rentals. We decorate all events, from birthday parties, gender reveals, baby showers, proposals, bridal showers, weddings and corporate events. We are working on offering more services starting 2025. One of the things I am most proud of is the community I have built with my clients and social media followers. We are always looking to improve in every aspect and provide the best services to our clients. One of the things that we created in the balloon world was BalloonMas during the last 12 days of Christmas. This consist of different balloon content everyday until Christmas and we give tips, tutorials, project videos and pictures. Last year was our first year doing it and now that we have our balloon office we are able to create lots of content and interact with our followers as we do it. There are many dreams and goals for Bonita Balloons Co. Some of them include teaching others how to begin their own balloon business. Like I always say “ There is room for all of us to grow in our balloon business”, and I want to be that person I wished I had when I started my journey to guide me and tell me what mistakes to avoid to become successful. Another is to retire my parents from working and be able to give back to them for all they have done for me. They have been my number 1 supporters and everything I do is for them. From the hours that go creating different backdrops to the transporting of big events, they have seen it all and for that I am forever grateful. As well as partnering up with foster and adoption agencies and providing balloon decor to children in the system and allow them to still have a beautiful and memorable birthdays. Like our slogan says “Creating memories one balloon at a time”, and we believe everyone deserves to have a memorable event and that is something I find joy in helping provide.
How do you think about luck?
I would not call it luck. We believe God opens and closes doors in each season of our life’s and as we view the journey of Bonita Balloons Co we are able to see God’s favor over our business. With every event that has been opened for us, it has shown us different methods to achieve our clients dream decor come to life. It has given us an opportunity to step out of our comfort zone create things we had no idea we could do! We can say the same thing with every closed door for our business. Slow days may seem like a bummer but those are the days we are able to REST and brainstorm new ideas. I encourage you not to look at slow days, weeks or months as a negative but as an opportunity to invest in yourself and your business. When starting Bonita Balloons Co. we took a leap of faith that started with a dream, balloon pump and some balloons. As we go into our 5th year in July 2025 we are able to reflect back at all we have learned during the last few years and show others that Latina women have an opportunity to shine and accomplish their dreams.
