Inspiring Conversations with Zachary Dyck of Rigid Motion Films LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Dyck.

Hi Zachary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my career as a filmmaker & a video creator when I was really young. I was about 10 years old when I first discovered stop motion lego videos on YouTube and I quickly set off to make my own. They weren’t great, but that was the beginning of my journey of using cameras to make my dreams “come to life”. That’s really what it’s all about for me, seeing a story in my head or just imagining a cool sequence of video and making it happen. Lego stop motion turned into getting Final cut Pro X for my 13th birthday and learning to edit & “direct” via wrangling the neighborhood kids to make action movies.

This desire for creation and telling stories pushed me to theater & video production classes in High School. I further developed camera skills, editing skills, acting skills & (by proxy) directing skills. I played basketball & was in choir, but my heart was always in performance & directing.

After making a bunch of extracurricular short films with friends, from composing the soundtrack, to filming, to set decorating, to editing, to directing, I knew I wanted filmmaking to be in my life for forever. I wasn’t alone in these endeavors as my great friends Dylan Nguyen & Carter Van Meter had similar passions and complimenting skills in the creation of these films & thus in 2016, after graduating, our production company Rigid Motion Films was born. We saw an avenue for never ceasing to create while also supporting ourselves.

We carried on to all study at the University of North Texas together in their film & media arts program, so as to continue to hone our craft, all while garnering corporate clients to create marketing videos for along the way. We really came up in the perfect age of digitalization and social media video creation, so the well of opportunities hasn’t and will never run dry for the need for professional video.

Fast forwarding to today, we have rebranded Rigid Motion Films and have poured in resources to make what once started as a passion project to a 100% viable business. As a part of the rebrand we’ve created a brand of “sustainable video production” that keeps a low footprint on set, gives back to the community via trash cleanups, & in general supports projects and companies that do the same. We have continued to make short films such as our 2022 psychological horror short film Flicker, as well as have kept recurring corporate customers such as Baylor University, Michaels, & CLS Living for over 4 years, & continue to gain new and differing clients every year. We serve the DFW, Austin, & other TX communities as needed & are happy traveling far and wide for production services, wherever the story takes us.

The passion to create is still very present & there is no end in sight in my learning about film and video production. I am always getting better & always seeking to create video for the sake of it. We have dreams of eventually having a brick and mortar production studio in Austin TX & being known for our quality work & the ability to give back to the community in ever bigger and meaningful ways.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The largest challenges we’ve faced have been keeping competitive with the hundreds of other production companies around. This means investing in modern gear, spending more money on marketing, & in general making sure our quality stands out. I think we’ve carved out a decent space in a very large market thankfully & we have the momentum of large client work, as well as many years of consistent experience behind us, now it’s a matter of growing it and keeping that momentum.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What I believe sets RMF a part from our competitors is our outstanding ability to schedule a shoot & start & end when we say we will. This is easier said than done in the video production world, so we are going to keep that train running.

In addition, we are a tight nit production company made up of best friends giving a relaxed, but professional workflow that keeps working with us easy and fun.

We offer all kinds of video production from docu-style corporate brand stories, non-profit fundraising testimonials, event highlight reels, to music videos & corporate production. When your project needs more than three crew members, we have a plethora of trusted & skilled friends in the video making community that we call upon to crew up our sets.

What I’m most proud of for Rigid Motion Films is the fact that we are still here and we continue to grow something that started so modestly. We continue to gain new clients & where many other’s have given up, we are still here carving our way & getting better & better.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
To throw out a few adjectives for myself growing up i’d say I was always energetic, creative, nerdy, & kind. These would probably summarize me till this day.
