Isis Brantley of North Dallas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Isis Brantley shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Isis, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am walking my path, which is self-love, purpose, and destiny.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the founder and CEO of NaturallyIsis, the original ancestral natural hair salon in Texas. I also founded the first natural hair care school in Texas, and over the last four decades I have trained over 3000 students who are now certified entrepreneurs in the natural hair industry.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My sweet Mother, who worked two or three jobs while raising me and my siblings, within a low-income community of South Dallas.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, in 1997 I was arrested by seven cops and thrown in jail in Dallas, for the “high crime” of braiding hair without a cosmetology license. At that time I almost gave up, but the power of my ancestors told me not to surrender.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
“Healing through the hair.” That is my singular mission in life, the one my ancestors endowed me with.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I was born to do what I am, through the art of ancestral hair adornment; but, I have always wanted to be a performing artist, as a theater actress and singer.
