Isun Ris of Richardson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Isun Ris shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Isun, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I actually just produced my first YouTube series with the help of some incredibly talented people. It was definitely a test of my own fortitude but being on the other side of it all has definitely instilled a sense of reassurance in pursuing film and television.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Isun Ris, I’m a writer/director/producer and one of the founders of “Two Shots Production” along with my co-founder, Logan Hamby and our newer partners Lily Lurid & Kylon Clay.

I think the most beautiful thing about our production company is making a way out of no way; utilizing tricks and tips in order to bring the best product possible. The things we’ve managed on shoe string budgets, while not necessarily revolutionary to the outside looking in, always forces me to look for more creative ways to push the envelope

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
That would be my dad, beyond a shadow of a doubt!

He’s always been a constant source of support, motivation and encouragement. Never once have I ever wondered or worried about him being in my corner because almost daily he’s been there no questions asked.

My wife and I celebrated 14 years of marriage, we have two incredible little girls and I’d do anything for them but I know they wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the man who raised me.

He’s the “Pa Kent” to my “Clark”.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Every day! But the point of going through hell is to get through it, not turn back halfway through.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
That’d be Pa Ris(Rodney actually). He’s the youngest of six and built like a bull but he’s always led with his heart first and his mind second.

There was a time when he and I went to get food for my mother and he was on the phone asking her what she’d wanted to eat but he was using an ear piece.

There was a homeless gentleman outside the restaurant that thought my dad was talking to him so he started telling my dad what he wanted. My dad says “I’m sorry, I was on the phone with my wife but I’ll gladly get you something to eat.”

Somewhere in that encounter the gentleman got upset and my father was all kinds of “bitch ass niggas” and things of the nature, me being the…let’s go with resourceful…child I was, I grabbed three plastic spoons (they didn’t have knives) and snapped them making them jagged but my dad, being the poster child of diplomacy, de-escalated the situation and bought the man his food and we left.

I showed him my “shiv” and he laughed and said he’s cancelling our HBO subscription.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That’s it’s the children’s responsibility to carry your legacy.

If anything, as a parent, you should be living for your kid’s legacy. No child asked to be on this planet so putting the responsibility of your reputation on their shoulders is stupid.
