We recently had the chance to connect with Ashley Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Funny enough, I feel like I am being called to be a photographer now. I have a degree and background in graphic design, so when I made the jump to being a full time photographer it was intimidating. Will I be good enough? Will people want to hire me for their photos? I am so thankful for the friends and family that trusted me in the beginning. I definitely have grown since then!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well, hi! I am the photographer of Ashley Carter Creative. My focus is families, milestones, maternity, and newborn. I have a laid back approach to photography. During your session I want to capture what makes your family unique. I will do a variety of posed portraits for those wall prints or Christmas cards and some candids. I want to document those sweet moments and that you may not see day-to-day. The sweet baby kisses, the furry friend hug, or even the hug from behind from your loved one. My favorite is when you come with inspiration for your session! At the end of the day, I want you to love your photos and smile when you look back on them.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my parents, really shaped who I am today. They raised me in the church and were always involved in all my activities. Whether it was sports, drama, art projects or mission trips. They were there always teaching me and guiding me when I hit obstacles. I tragically lost my dad a couple of years ago, and to this day I still remember his words of wisdom to me. I hope I can pass that onto my son who we just had!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Enjoy being a kid! As an only child, I wanted to grow up so fast wanting to be an adult. But when you look back you don’t realize those were the golden years. It’s okay to slow down and enjoy all the kid activities. Bills are not fun!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
You have to have proper exposure and composition for all photos. The rules are good parameters but they are meant to be broken. That’s my philosophy in life, break the rules! When you have the deeper shadows or brighter highlights in some photos, those are some of the best!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I am at home with my family. I love talking and meeting new clients. But at the end of the day, when my husband and I are cooking and listening to records with our son. It is the absolute best.
