We recently had the chance to connect with Corey Boyd and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Corey, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Working out not only makes me lose track of time but it also makes me forget any issues that are plaguing me mentally. It’s like a form of escapism that’s beneficial both physically and mentally. It also serves as a sort of reset that energizes me and gives me a mental edge. I feel like it’s a cheat code to success.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Corey Boyd and fitness is not only my profession but my lifestyle and my favorite thing. I’m a certified personal trainer and small business owner. 25 Muscle is my brand and it is named after my hometown neighborhood in Haynesville, Louisiana. I’m currently 47 years old and I’ve been consistently training and into fitness for 35 years. The special thing about my style of personal training is that it focuses on being a healthier and fitter version of yourself. Functional training and movements are the focus so that everyday aspects of life become easier. A byproduct of this is a better lifestyle and a better looking body. My slogan is “Building Better Birthday Suits”. With each client, that’s the goal.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I feel like my peers saw me before I could see myself. I knew what I enjoyed, knew how I liked to spend my time, and knew what interested me the most. But it was those that were around me that saw what I am now. I was just looking at fitness as a hobby and a form of exercise. But as time went on, people began to turn to me for fitness advice, pay me for workouts and imitate the things i did in the gym. Coming from a small town, being a personal trainer was never even a consideration. Yet, those that knew me not only suggested that I become one but also already considered me to be one. As the saying goes, “your habits determine your future.” My habits definitely determined mine.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The most defining wound of my life was incarceration. I considered it as a scar and a stigma rather than an obstacle that I had conquered. I think we all look at our battles, issues and shortcomings as faults or failures instead of viewing them as testimonies and motivations. It took me a while to truly realize that we all have faced a battle. The story of yours can be an inspiration to help someone else face their battle and win. You never know who you may inspire and you never know who is at a turning point in their journey. I always wanna be the reason someone believed and won rather than gave up and conceded.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I feel like the fitness industry is negatively painted by end results rather than the process itself. Instead of the focus being the journey that it takes to get to the goal, we are often misled by people that have taken shortcuts. Surgery and illegal drugs are glorified instead of vilified.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I hope to leave a legacy of resilience. I want my story to be one of inspiration, hope and triumph. I want people to say that despite what he went through, he never gave up and nothing ever stopped him from being and doing what he truly believed in. But most of all, I want my help and good deeds to be remembered. Because no matter how successful you are or what you accomplish, the truest measurement of the heart is how you gave back, helped or inspired your fellow man.
