We’re looking forward to introducing you to Courtney Carter. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Who are you learning from right now?
Right now I find myself learning from my clients! I used to read a lot of in depth photography Lessons Learned, Best Practices, blah blah until I was exhausted. But honestly, learning about what my clients love to get out of their photos and seeing which photos they choose to hang on their walls in their homes has helped me re-frame what it means to deliver meaningful photos. Instead of shooting for perfect technique or exposure I’m willing to lean into capturing an expression or a moment a little bit more. It is definitely a worthwhile learning curve, but has involved some reprogramming!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Courtney Carter, and I am the face behind Dark Horse Photography. My photography services are geared towards families, equestrian, and small business. As a mom and lifelong equestrian, I am uniquely qualified to capture families and horse portraits in the best light. I think the biggest thing I want readers to know is that I truly love each session; meeting new families, horses, making kids laugh, seeing a new barn; the whole bit! Each client for me is such a fun experience, and I really try to bring that through in my photography.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The idea that I need to be be producing photos that have a similar aesthetic or style to what people “seem” to like needs to be released. Well, that idea really needs to be locked in a lead box and thrown into the ocean. Following popular photography editing trends helped me find my own voice and style, but that time has passed, and now I am fully embracing the fact that clients now hire me for my perspective and my own style. As a creative it is the ultimate compliment to have a client value your unique perspective!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Oh my gosh, I would tell her that her energy and hard work all pays off! I’d also slip her some cash, because she was BROKE for along time in school!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I think the biggest lie right now is that AI will be able to completely fix and edit almost anything in a photo. While I think it is a huge asset that can ultimately streamline your workflow, it doesn’t replace a skilled editor or graphic designer.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Absolutely after I have been out with my horse, 100%. He is my therapist and it just so happens being outside in nature is good for the soul as well!
