We’re looking forward to introducing you to Darshana Patel. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Darshana, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Exercise
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Education has always been important to me so it was no surprise when I decided
to change careers in 2003 from an engineer to an educator.
I come from a long line of educators. My uncles back home (in India) were Math
professors, and I grew up around them. Teaching always was in the back of my mind
because that always was a strong suit from growing up.
I was sitting in a McDonald’s talking to a friend and she said, ‘since you always have loved
teaching and I have a friend who owns a Kumon center, why don’t you look into it.’ She kind of
put a seed in my head.”
The decision paid off when I opened Kumon of Northwest Carrollton began the journey of teaching thousands of students.
I’m a true believer in the Kumon method. The curriculum is very close to what I
grew up with focusing on the foundation of math and reading skills.
what sets Kumon apart from its competitors is its focus on the individual. The students learn how to learn themselves rather than from a teacher. I definitely believe in self-learning because that’s how you have that ability to figure things out on your own which can take you a long way.
The goal of Kumon is to bring out the potential in the kid so that they can be a staple
of the community. What they learn at Kumon they can use in their life and give back to the community.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a shy immigrant who was not very good with people skills. I had to break that barrier when I decided to become an entrepreneur.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
That suffering does not last too long.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I have a very approachable personality.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My care for their kid’s education
