Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with DeAnna Stone of McKinney, Texas

DeAnna Stone shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

DeAnna, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Recently, I have rekindled my love for art. It has brought a calm peacefulness back to my world and allows for reflection.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Working as the Development Director for the Chestnut Square Heritage Village, is rewarding. McKinney Texas has worked diligently to preserve the architectural beauty of our history. Chestnut Square is a beautiful testimony to what it means to come together as a community and to preserve our heritage and history. Chestnut Square is the home to the number one Farmer’s Market in Texas, nine historical buildings dating back to the mid 1800s as well as an elegant 1800s chapel, reception hall, bridal suite and pavilion for exquisite events and weddings. In our fast paced world of today, there is something peaceful about stepping into our unique special community and reflect on what it must’ve been like to live in a simpler time. Prairie adventure camp allows students to explore what it would have been like for a child in the 1800s, our trolley tours and village tours are sure to take you back to a moment of nostalgia and our Holiday Tour of Homes remind us of our roots and the importance of community. As a theater director for 25 years, I always find joy in telling a story and experiencing life through the eyes of another perspective. Chestnut Square is filled with authentic genuine stories that are rooted in what Mckinney has become today. We would love for you to become part of our story.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
In my early 20s, I was dating a young man that was committed to our military and serving our country. He was tragically killed in an army accident that took place during training. At such an early age, I learned very quickly that life is very short and we must embrace each and every day. I have a deep respect for people that serve our country through the military or public service and I find myself being very thankful for their sacrifice. In our fast-paced world that is constantly facing distraction, it is easy to get swept away and lose the moments in time that truly make a difference.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
As I faced this loss at an early age, it was rather tempting to sink into depression. I found myself feeling very bitter and angry that this was part of my story yet I managed to complete that semester of college with the help of community. It was in that community where I met my current husband of 31 years today we have four amazing children, three of which have amazing spouses. two boys and two girls two grandbabies, and one on the way. In the moment of grief, it is difficult to imagine that you will find joy again and yet it was through that loss that shaped me to be the person that I am today. I work diligently to always see the good, cherish every moment that I am blessed with, in honor of the relationships that are in my life.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
As I reflect on what really matters most in life, it is rooted in spirituality, relationships and quality time. My heart is to serve and encourage others to see outside of self imposed negative stories that limit our ability to show up for others and be fully present.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, praise is rather uncomfortable for me especially in public. Serving others is something that comes without an expectation in return. It is often a natural response to receive a thank you; however, it is not the why behind serving others.
