Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jessica & Celso Hernandez of Arlington ,TX

We recently had the chance to connect with Jessica & Celso Hernandez and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica & Celso, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One misconception about our business is that we only offer backdrops for the event industry. Yes, our clients are primarily comprised of individuals in the event industry, however we also create and customize a variety of items within the wood and acrylic material industry. Since the beginning of our business journey we have always known that we wanted to provide a variety of services within the wood working industry, which is why our business name and logo states event prop shop and more. Another frequently misunderstood thing about our business is that we only accept large scale projects. We accept all projects, regardless of quantity or scale, which allows us to assist both large commercial clients and individuals with small more personal requests. This is why we always encourage all our potential clients to reach out to us with any potential project ideas they might have.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
DFW Wood Creations is a Husband(Celso) and Wife (Jessica) duo who initiated this business out of a dream to someday begin something of their own and in the process help others create wonderful memories. We are a business that offers custom in house design and fabrication services. Our services range from large scale branding activation displays to kids tables, slide wood structures for ball pit play areas, engraving , to creating personalized gifts or items for any special event. We enjoy receiving creative and unique inquiries that helps us grow and challenge our skills and knowledge. As we continue to grow our top priority will always be to provide clients with quality work and the best possible customer service.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Stepping into the business world as a newcomer, one is constantly confronted with unforeseen challenges. A frequently unmentioned aspect is the diversity of personalities you encounter. While some individuals exhibit thoughtfulness and consideration in their communication, others may lack appreciation for the efforts of others. As a business owner, the ability to navigate these fluctuations – the triumphs and setbacks – is paramount. It’s a crucial skill to learn how to manage demanding or challenging clients without allowing their behavior to create personal distress. These are just a few examples of what can break bonds between people not only in the business world but also in our personal life. Learning how to set a side our own personal emotions and clearly communicate in certain instances can help restore broken bonds between individuals. For example, active listening and empathy can bridge communication gaps, while seeking common ground and focusing on shared goals can rebuild trust.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
To be completely honest, I believe that a multifaceted collection of fears has consistently functioned as a substantial obstacle, preventing me from fully unlocking my potential and achieving my full aspirations. The constant presence of uncertainty, a fundamental aspect of life, combined with the persistent worry surrounding the potential for errors – whether in personal relationships or within my professional endeavors – has created a substantial emotional weight. Beyond these general anxieties, there is an ongoing internal challenge in effectively balancing the responsibilities of being the most supportive and present parent I can be while simultaneously nurturing my personal and professional growth ambitions. In addition to these considerations, a pervasive fear of negative judgment, particularly within this relatively new and uncharted business environment, contributes to a feeling of being somewhat overwhelmed and, at times, even paralyzed by doubt.

These various anxieties manifest in tangible ways, exerting a noticeable impact on my decision-making and overall actions. For instance, my apprehension toward the unknown often stops me from confidently grasping exciting opportunities and taking the calculated risks that could propel me forward. I am aware that my naturally cautious approach is deeply embedded in an underlying anxiety concerning potential setbacks, leading me to continually strive for an almost unattainable standard of perfection. Furthermore, as someone relatively new to the complexities of the business world, I am frequently burdened by the nagging worry of falling short of expectations or not being able to contribute effectively. Nevertheless, I find strength in my innate resilience and unwavering belief that, through persistent effort, continuous learning, and a willingness to adapt, challenges can be successfully navigated, and the realization of goals, both in business and in life, is absolutely attainable.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
When considering what truly resonates within me and shapes my priorities, I find that family and the bonds we share take center stage. Similarly, the unwavering support and genuine connection of my friends provide immense strength and joy. Beyond these relationships, I place a high value on loyalty, both in my own actions and in the people I surround myself with. Lastly, happiness in my career is essential for me to live a fulfilling life.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Yes, creativity has always been an intrinsic aspect of my identity, deeply ingrained in my being. Prior to our woodworking venture, I was consistently drawn to crafting and design, an innate inclination that influenced my pursuits. I frequently engaged in DIY projects, meticulously creating decorations and layouts for my children’s birthday celebrations and other significant family events, always aiming to establish memorable and heartwarming environments. Currently, the ability to seamlessly incorporate creative and design elements into our work is exceptionally gratifying. Observing our woodworking projects evolve from initial concepts into tangible, beautiful creations provides immense satisfaction and fulfillment. Furthermore, the unwavering support and shared passion for our business from my husband transform this entire endeavor into a cherished aspiration, one that surpasses any expectations I could have envisioned.
