Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kechena Heard of Aubrey, TX

We recently had the chance to connect with Kechena Heard and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Kechena, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that’s been bringing me so much joy lately is my new journey into motherhood. It’s been such a beautiful and transformative experience—watching my little one grow, learning new things every day, and embracing the balance between nurturing a baby and nurturing my own dreams. It’s reminded me to slow down, be present, and find inspiration in the smallest, sweetest moments.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kechena Heard, and I’m a Haitian-born fashion designer specializing in bespoke women’s formalwear and couture gowns. My brand, Kechena Designs, is all about celebrating the power, elegance, and individuality of women through intentional design and craftsmanship. What makes my work unique is how I merge luxury detailing with cultural storytelling—each piece I create is meant to empower the wearer and make her feel seen, strong, and unforgettable.

My journey has taken me from studying fashion design at Missouri State University and in London, England, to being featured on the Tamron Hall Show’s Up & Coming Designer Series, where I was mentored by Bibhu Mohapatra. I’ve also collaborated with major brands like SHEIN X and Joann Fabrics, and recently had the honor of designing costumes for New Edition’s backup dancers for their Las Vegas Residency.

Right now, I’m embracing an exciting new chapter—balancing my full-time return to design with my beautiful new journey into motherhood. It’s inspired me to approach fashion with even more heart, creativity, and purpose, as I continue building a legacy that merges artistry, heritage, and empowerment.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was a curious, creative girl who saw beauty in everything around me—from fabric scraps to the way people expressed themselves through style. I dreamed fearlessly and created without limits, not worrying about whether it was “right” or “practical.” I was imaginative, bold, and full of heart—always sketching, designing, and finding ways to make something out of nothing.

That version of me is still here; she’s just grown wiser. I’ve learned to blend that same childlike wonder with purpose and experience, staying true to my roots while shaping a life and brand that reflect authenticity, faith, and artistry.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Trust the timing of your journey — everything you’re praying for is already being prepared for you. Just keep showing up as your authentic self.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is a reflection of who I am, but not the whole story. It’s the composed, confident side that represents my purpose and passion. The real me also holds the quiet moments — the doubts, prayers, and perseverance that people don’t always see. Both are true; one just lives in the spotlight, and the other fuels it.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
That’s a great question — one my husband has actually asked me before. If I laid down my name, my role, and everything I own, what would remain is my faith, my heart, and the purpose God placed within me. Titles and possessions can fade, but the love I pour into others and the light I carry through my work—that’s the legacy that endures.
