We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nikkie Hunter. Check out our conversation below.
Nikkie, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Most days start before the sun even thinks about rising. By the time the city is quiet and still, I’m already preparing for a full day of serving people.
My morning begins in the healthcare world, where every decision carries weight.
I step into work ready to tackle staffing concerns, patient needs, provider updates, and the operational challenges that come with keeping people healthy and supported. I am answering emails, reviewing reports, checking in with teams, and ensuring patients receive the care and compassion they deserve.
Sometimes it’s answering calls from residents about neighborhood concerns.
Other times, it’s meeting with community partners, nonprofits, business owners, and local organizations who need support or collaboration.
I review policy items, prepare for council briefings, respond to messages, and handle the constant rhythm of people needing your guidance, your voice, or simply your presence.
It’s a unique balance—switching between healthcare operations and community leadership—but I move through it with purpose.
When most people are ending their day, mine is only shifting into its second half.
Whether it’s a City Council meeting, a nonprofit board meeting, a ribbon cutting, a neighborhood event, a town hall, or a community initiative—I show up.
I greet residents by name.
I listen to concerns.
I advocate for improvements.
I stand as a familiar, trusted face in Arlington.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a dedicated public servant, healthcare professional, and community advocate committed to strengthening Arlington through leadership, compassion, and progress. As the Arlington City Council Member for District 3, she champions initiatives that support families, expand access to healthcare, and uplift local nonprofits—bringing people together through service and collaboration.
With a strong background in healthcare administration and community engagement, I have built a reputation for being hands-on, solutions-driven, and deeply rooted in the neighborhoods she serves. I lead signature community programs—including health fairs, food drives, youth outreach, and monthly nonprofit tea parties—creating meaningful partnerships that make a measurable impact.
Beyond public office, am the creator of the Nikkie on the Go platform, where I highlight community stories and spotlights leaders who are driving positive change. My work reflects my belief that leadership begins with service—and that every voice deserves to be heard.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up as a very shy child, but over time I found my voice, my confidence, and my purpose. What once felt like a quiet whisper has grown into a strong commitment to serve, uplift, and lead. Today, I stand as a community leader who understands the power of growth, resilience, and stepping forward—even when it once felt uncomfortable.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
As a child, I was incredibly shy — and because of that, I faced bullying that left deep emotional scars. But I refused to let those experiences define me. Instead, I turned that pain into strength, resilience, and determination. Today, I stand as a strong community leader, committed to creating spaces where every voice is valued and every person feels seen.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to using my voice to bring greater awareness to women’s health. That commitment is why I created the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair in Arlington—an event dedicated to education, early detection, and empowering women across our community. My goal is simple: ensure every woman has access to the resources, support, and information she needs to live a healthier, stronger life.”
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
My peace comes from knowing I’m walking in my calling and making a difference one day at a time.
