Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Rekesha Pittman of Frisco, TX

Rekesha Pittman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Rekesha, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently published my 20th book! It made me feel proud because I prioritize my own work again. Sometimes, I get lost in helping others and push my accomplishments aside. I decided to focus and got another one done!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am affectionately known as the “midwife” to over 1,000 authors worldwide. I help entrepreneurs create profitable books, speaking platforms, and training programs to become the expert of an industry and not just another business. I have been in my industry professionally for the last 15 years and counting.

I have achieved success with my brand through hosting conferences, live training sessions, virtual instruction, author expos, international writing retreats, business masterminds, and strategic coaching through courses. Initially, I began in Texas as Get Write Publishing. I still run the publishing company, and now I have expanded as The EAST Formula(TM). EAST equals entrepreneur – author – speaker – trainer. All four components are incorporated to establish true expertise and profitability for our clients.

I am currently working on another book as well as launching a new podcast! Go EAST with me!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I have had the same life mentor since the age of 18. I met her when I was a freshman at the University of Southern California. She worked in the library and helped me get my first job on campus.

Through her many talks with me over the years, I learned to embrace my personality, sense of humor, and unique talents without apology. I honored her wisdom through a book called, “Masterful Mentorship: Leadership, Life, and Love Lessons.” I use this book to mentor others and even read it again myself when I feel the pressures of life mounting.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Desperation has deficits! Suffering taught me to keep my emotions under control and make decisions based on who I know I am and not my circumstances. Whenever I am tempted to make choices rooted in panic, I realized that they can impact my sense of pride, progress, and even cause me to lose time or money. Remaining aware of potential risks keeps me balanced and allows me to make positive choices.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Many emerging and independent authors treat book publishing like a guessing game. What I mean by that is that they do not take the time to research how to properly write, format, design, and market a book that they can be proud of. Many authors spend thousands of dollars on books that are poorly written or improperly packaged.

I entered the market as an author educator because I saw countless books that could have been more successful if they were produced with excellence. Professional publishing is an artform. What people don’t know can have a negative impact on their brand and reputation.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want people to say that I made other people realize and achieve their dreams. I always say, “Once you become an author, you will never be unAUTHORized!” I want to be remembered for being a champion of excellence–not for self–but for the legacy that is to follow. What we do for ourselves can open a door of hope and achievement for someone else. I want people to say that I did more than inspire them; I compelled them to take action!
