We’re looking forward to introducing you to Spencer Swapp. Check out our conversation below.
Spencer, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I am so proud of myself for getting fit, both mentally and physically. I’ve worked so hard on becoming a better person, not to impress others, but for myself and for my future as a husband and father. While some days are better than others, I’m so proud of myself for getting a little better every day and staying positive.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Spencer Swapp, and I’m proud to say I’ve been building my own business in auto glass replacement and repair for three years now, starting when I was only 21. I have worked with integrity and so diligently, through long hours, in sometimes tough situations, but always with care and concern for my customers, and I am so proud of that! I am so happy that I can say I am honest and will always give my best to those I work with – that’s what keeps me going!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
The person I feel saw me clearly before I did is my wife, Elisabeth. She saw who I was striving to be, and what my potential really is, and had a lot of faith in my ability to do great and important things. With her faith in me, and the support of my awesome in-laws, I started to have more confidence and faith in myself. If you asked me four years ago if I would be married and running my own successful business, I would have thought you were making crazy stuff up. My wife and in-laws have supported me through long hours, hot, difficult work, and have helped me when my confidence in myself was lower. I think it’s truly due to their faith in me that I have become so successful and now believe in myself.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
When I was younger, school was very difficult for me because I am dyslexic, with a couple other auditory issues. I always felt like I couldn’t understand the teacher, and because of that, thought that I just wasn’t smart or competent. I was afraid to read or speak in class, and was super shy. When I started this business, it was really tough because I was so scared to speak publicly, which I have to do with customers, and to network with others in networking situations. A couple of years ago, I put myself through speech therapy as an adult, and I’ve been working on it ever since, and now can confidently and proudly speak in business settings.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One of strongest beliefs is that honesty and integrity is the BEST way to build a great, successful business. No matter who I am talking to – a customer, dealership, or shop owner, I am always honest in every step and cost. I believe in treating others the way that I want to be treated, and many people have said things like, “in 18 years of working in auto care, you are the first honest auto glass person I’ve ever worked with – and the nicest.” I’ve never had to ask for positive reviews – and I’m so proud to say that all of my over 200 five-star reviews are genuine customers.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that one day people will share my story – about how I came from a place where I thought I would never succeed in anything, because of my learning disabilities, to someone who is very successful because of my hard work, and the tremendous support of my wife and in-laws. They have been my rock. As you press forward in life, and keep going, no matter what, you can do hard things with support from an awesome team and a faith in heavenly help.
