Life and Work with Amirah Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amirah Adams.

Amirah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion and natural talent for makeup were discovered in 2011. I became a waitress shortly out of highschool to support my family. Even though I made decent money being a waitress, my gut always told me that I was destined for something bigger and better. I would spend hours perfecting my makeup before each shift at work, and even though I had many friends encourage me to pursue makeup, at the time, I wasn’t really familiar with a successful makeup artist, especially in a little town like Grand Prairie. Prayer and a strong support system helped me gain the courage to pursue my dreams in the makeup industry. I then started freelancing in 2014 as an artist and named my brand, Boojie Beauty. I have been in the industry going on 4 years now and have created stunning looks for numerous fashion shows. I have had work published in several magazines and editorial pieces. It has always been important to me to remain humble and professional and I would like to think that it has forged many successful relationships in the beauty industry. I have proven time and time again that I am a valuable asset to any project. I am very passionate about my work and career as an artist and I hope to inspire people all over the world to live in their purpose and to work hard to make your dreams happen!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This makeup journey is not the smoothest road, and it is definitely not the over the top glamorous life that social media makes it out to be. Makeup in itself is pretty and beautiful, but putting in the work as an artist isn’t so pretty. I learned very early in my career as a Makeup Artist that doing your own makeup is nothing like doing makeup on someone else. I had to master giving my clients a unique look specific to my brand all the while making sure that its what they like as well! I went through a phase where I would have difficulty with things like color matching in different skin tones. Makeup is also very expensive and it was very discouraging to me that I had to keep a second job to help fund my career as an artist. I also went through a period in which I started to lack confidence and would get anxiety worrying if the client would like their makeup in the end. My advice to young women who are pursuing makeup as a profession is to do their research, start building your kit as early as possible and get as much practice on as many different types of women as possible!

Please tell us about Boojie Beauty.
I am a makeup artist that specializes in full glam. I am most known for completely transforming your look. I pride myself on turning my skill into a business. I sought out and obtained my clientele and through that, I was able to start branding myself and started building careers in other areas in the beauty industry like being a brand ambassador and a YouTube Guru.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Most definitely! WhenIi was around the age 7 or 8, my mother started to sell Mary Kay. She would have these beautiful, elaborate Mary Kay parties that I always thought were so cool. But, my mother enjoyed mary kay for the skin care aspect of it. She would push facials and masks and wasn’t just very big on makeup. So, when I would go in her closet where her makeup as stored, I would play in all the lipsticks and eyeshadows. Also, Mary Kay was just a side hobby for my mother. She spent most of her energy in school to become a doctor and eventually opened her own home health care business. So, I took my early interest in makeup, along with watching my mother start her own business and was able to grow a successful career as a makeup artist.
