Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Voss and Jasmine Sadry.
Amy and Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We’ve been best friends for 10 years so it was a no-brainer when it came to partnering up to do something. Both of us have extensive backgrounds in media/broadcasting and we knew that we definitely wanted to do a podcast together so we thought, “well, why the hell not?!”
We’re both tomboys who love football (and sports in general) and we also love to be competitive. We aren’t afraid to give each other a hard time since we’re like the sisters we never had so it makes it easy to never be afraid to toe the line with each other.
The concept of the “First & 10’s” podcast stems from an all-female fantasy football league made up of our girlfriends- some know a little, some know a lot- but one thing’s for sure: there’s always drama, some cattiness, and a whole lot of cutthroat factor when it comes to winning. When people ask us what our podcast is like, we say, “think RHOD (Real Housewives of Dallas) meets fantasy football.”
We started with doing one episode a week from a little radio studio late at night literally while the overnight crew was sweeping around us. We knew we had something and we really believed in it, so nothing was going to stop us. After tons of blood, sweat, tears, and the occasional bottles of wine, we eventually moved to do two episodes a week and incorporated a video/live-streaming aspect to it thanks to On-Air Media, based here in Dallas.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was and is definitely not a smooth road- we undoubtedly kept a few wine and liquor stores open for sure. Though podcasting has been around for a while, it’s still new to a lot of people and we find ourselves still having to explain what it is and how to even consume it; not just from a listener aspect, but also from an advertising aspect as well.
The biggest challenge is the fact that the podcast world is so saturated that standing out amongst the crowd is difficult to do. We navigate through the struggles by believing that we have something special; that no other podcast is doing what we’re doing solely from a female perspective.
Our advice to other women would be that if you truly believe in what you have or who you are: to never, ever give up. To constantly go out there and push for what you want and have the confidence in yourself to keep going. What we learned is that if it doesn’t absolutely scare you to death, then you’re not doing it right. Giving up is easy. Working for what you want is hard, but nothing compares to the feeling you get when you see your hard work paying off.
What else should our readers know?
During the regular NFL season, our podcast is centered around the reality show that is our all-female fantasy football league. During the off-season, our podcast shifts to a female perspective driven, satirical, sports talk show anchored by us (Jasmine Sadry and Amy Voss).
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
We utilize an app called “Marco Polo” which is basically like a video walkie-talkie. All of our league members use it to communicate and talk trash with us and each other during the season and these are then lifted and used during our episodes. Adobe Audition is a HUGE friend of ours too, as we use it for our audio-only episodes. We love social media in general and platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter help in communicating with our listeners/viewers. It’s really our biggest way of promoting and marketing ourselves and our podcast.
We’ve garnered some camaraderie with other sports podcasts, which have not only been a tremendous asset in growing ourselves as a podcast but has also aided tremendously in cross-promotion.
