Today we’d like to introduce you to Charli Cates.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Charli. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Cosmetology was a huge leap of faith for me; it was never something I actually saw myself pursuing. However, that thought process changed wholeheartedly once I was attending school full time. Although everything I was learning was so challenging and it made learning so rewarding. The more I practiced, I began to develop my own style and discovered my passion for creative color.
I was constantly looking for models and entering competitions to showcase my creative expression. My community of support and amazing clients was growing exponentially. I utilize social media on so many platforms and I firmly believe that’s been my turning point for my type of clientele.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Currently, I’m an independent colorist, it hasn’t been ideal for me. I want to be in salon full time with other talented individuals. I miss the community so much and I thrive well in it. Dallas as a whole isn’t as abstract with style as much as it could be, and this makes finding clientele more difficult. I want to create a movement of people being recklessly themselves. No more cookie-cutter color, no more blending into the crowd. I want my clients to make people’s heads turn and jaws drop. I want to break the norm of traditional beauty, and I want my clients to have the hair of their fantasy.
My advice is never to stop being yourself no matter if you “fit in or not”. You are what you attract, and your work will speak for itself. Do what consistently makes you happy, and pour your heart and soul into it. Always challenge yourself and do things outside of your comfort zone. Express yourself how you please, this is such a beautiful industry to be in.
