Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth (Lizi) Gregory.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Elizabeth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I joined Mary Kay Cosmetics as an Independent Beauty Consultant on my 18th birthday! I had been to an event hosted by some of the sales force members and I was so awe-struck by the women who were earning cars, making 6 figures (and more!) and still keeping their priorities God first, family second and career third. Mary Kay Ash believed that faith and family should come before your career, and that really stood out to me!
My first four years as an Independent Beauty Consultant – well, let’s just say, I didn’t do much “consulting”! I decided to be the undercover Mary Kay girl who enjoyed getting personal product at a discount, selling to my family, and stocking up on Christmas gifts at a great price.
About three years ago, I had a change in heart about the Mary Kay Opportunity. I loved the idea of being my own boss, setting my own hours, being recognized for my efforts, having unlimited income potential, and being able to build other women up in the process! I decided to really go for it this time! I was shy, introverted, not sales-y (couldn’t even sell Girl Scout cookies as a kid) and extremely busy – but I loved the idea that this business could help me grow in those areas, with a supportive family of women who would have my back!
I went for it – and less than a year later, I had stepped into leadership as a Sales Director and had earned the use of my very first Career Car!
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. The journey is not always easy – but I do believe that it is worth it. One of my girlfriends in Mary Kay always says, “I have a dream, and the journey is worth it”. I truly believe that!
When I first started my business, lots of people thought what I was doing was silly. I didn’t have overwhelming support from my friends and family – and honestly, I am grateful for that. It forced me to get really serious about my “why” for my business, and I knew that I had to take my business seriously if I wanted them to, too!
I also had to get really comfortable with being uncomfortable. I had to learn that living in a comfort zone is not really living! I decided that growth and change made me better – and not only do I want to be better for me, but I also want to bring the best me to all my relationships! Now, I look forward to the opportunities that stretch me and push the limits of what I’m comfortable with, because I know they’re making me better!
My advice for women who are just starting out is – DO NOT QUIT ON YOUR DREAM. I find that often, as soon as it gets a little tough, we give up. Then, we come up with some “great reason” as to why we had to quit our dream. It pains me to see that. Rome wasn’t built in a day – and nothing worth having is free. So take the time, embrace the grind and go for it. You are worth it!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Well, can I just say first that I LOVE WHAT I DO? I am so passionate about helping women be the most confident version of themselves. Through finding the perfect lipstick, making her skin feel amazingly soft, or by helping her build a business that supports her family financially – these are just a few of the ways I get to help women find their confidence.
As a Beauty Consultant, my job is to help you find the perfect skincare regimen for you! Something tailored to your skin type, that addresses what your skincare needs and concerns are. I usually do this at a Skin Care Class or a 1-1 Facial appointment! Once my client is loving her skin, we play in makeup! I love color consultations because they allow me to customize a makeup look that my client will love, and teach her how to apply it so that she can re-create the look regularly.
As a mentor, my job is to support women in their Mary Kay businesses. I work with a team of over 100 women to help them build their businesses at their own pace. I get to coach and mentor these women, train them, equip them and recognize & reward their efforts! We are building something great, and I am so blessed to lead a team of record-breakers!
I’m proud to represent the Mary Kay product and to lead a top team in Mary Kay – but I’m also so proud to represent Mary Kay the Company. Mary Kay is a company with a heart! This company follows the Golden Rule and emphasizes the importance of giving back through the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. We have provided over $60 million in support to women’s shelters across the US in our mission to end domestic violence – forever. Mary Kay has also donated more than $28 million to medical research in hopes of finding a cure for the cancers that affect women and children. We also just planted our millionth tree at our new manufacturing facility in Lewisville! I’m just so honored to be a part of a company that is so socially & environmentally responsible.
This, plus the personal touch – that’s what sets us apart.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Honestly, I feel that one of the biggest barriers to female leadership today is lack of self-confidence. Self-confidence impacts every aspect of our lives. This can cause women to not take that leap of faith and act on their dream, or it can show up as lack of grit and cause them to quit when they need to press in the most.
Greater self-confidence breeds less fear, less anxiety, greater motivation, more resilience, stronger relationships, gives us a stronger sense of purpose and SO MUCH MORE. This is something that we have to take really seriously – by teaching women who they are and whose they are.
People will follow a confident leader! Not all of us are born at a 10 on the self-confidence scale, but it is something that we can learn. I believe that I’ve put in a lot of work here – constantly taking the steps to build self-confidence to be the best leader I can be.
In The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, John C Maxwell writes, “If your desire is a 10 and your self-esteem is a 5, you’ll never perform at the level of a 10. You’ll perform as a 5 or lower. People are never able to outperform their self-image.”
I’ll leave it at that!
