Life and Work with Fadak Raza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fadak Raza.

Fadak, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always obsessed with anything beauty related! My love for makeup really grew when YouTube started emerging with beauty gurus. I remember staying up all night long during my summer vacations in middle school all throughout high school, watching different makeup tutorials and trying those techniques on myself. As I started to get better and better with applying makeup on myself, I started to do looks on my friends and family to get more practice. Everyone encouraged me so much and really pushed me to make this a career. Following my high school graduation, I had so many friends who knew exactly what their career path was going to be and what colleges they were going to apply to and well for me I couldn’t seem to figure out what I wanted to do. One thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to get my cosmetology license and learn how to do everything. I actually taught all the makeup lessons for my school because they loved how I did my own makeup and enjoyed seeing the looks I created for my first few clients.

After I got my license, I worked at a salon cutting hair for about a year and realized that wasn’t what I wanted to do. Shortly after, I started working with a few different artists and really started to get comfortable doing different hairstyles and makeup looks! Fast forward to today, I now work as a full-time makeup artist and I’m proud to say that I am self-taught. I do however plan on taking some training with makeup artists in the industry that I look up to because you truly never stop learning! Even after 3 years in the industry professionally, I still learn new techniques and I put all my efforts into making sure that I perfect each and every client. It is a passion that I have had for as long as I can remember and one that I truly take pride in. I absolutely love what I do and there is no greater feeling than when your clients appreciate your art and choose you to be apart of some of the most memorable moments in their lives.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing good ever comes easy, especially in an industry like this. You really have to start from the bottom and work your way up. I remember looking up to so many artists and wondering when I would ever get to that level but with time and hard work, I have gotten further than I ever imagined and I’m still working my way up! Makeup and hair artistry truly has to be a passion in order for one to be successful. It is a passion first and a job second. You have to have tons of patience and be open to constructive criticism because it will only help you improve. You have to understand your weaknesses and be willing to work on them. It is all trial and error and it is something that you will figure out along the way! Different clients have different needs and you really have to be well rounded and understand what works for some people, what doesn’t and why.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Faces by Fadak – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in makeup artistry and hair styling for brides as well as party services for any occasion! I’m most proud of being self-taught and growing my business from scratch. I think what sets me apart from others, would definitely be my eye for detail. I’m such a perfectionist and will make sure my clients look and feel their absolute best before they leave my chair. I like to give clients my true and honest feedback on the looks they suggest and provide them with suggestions that I think will help their end result come out exactly how they want.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I think one of the main barriers would have to be the competition. I believe that each person will get what it meant for them. You have to put in what you want to see come out of your business. More times than not, we are compared to others, when it’s really about what makes our art unique to us. Often times, the amount of hard work and level of education in this industry is overlooked. It isn’t as easy as picking up some tools and creating a look, it is about truly educating yourself in the various parts of this field and understanding the techniques behind what we do and why we do it.
