Today we’d like to introduce you to Janae Samuel of Well Beyond Beauty.
Janae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It’s been a journey! My love for the beauty industry started growing up in a family of five girls. I was always the one designated to do the hair and makeup! In high school, I had the opportunity to go to a three years cosmetology school, and there’s where the journey began. It was there my love for makeup and skincare really developed! Throughout those years, I worked in a few high-end salons and learned the ins and outs. With a few detours along the way, I ended up going to makeup school in the heart of Hollywood, and it was there my love for runway and high fashion was birthed. After that, I had the opportunity to work different runways, and my heart really lives for the hustle behind the scenes. After that, I had recently moved to Dallas and got a freelance job with Yeves St Laurent and Armani doing makeup for them. Through that and a few other connections, I then began doing freelance makeup and doing commercial, live events and print work in the Dallas area and beyond. I’ve done this for the past 10 years this year! This year, I went back to chase after a goal I’ve had and got my esthetics license and laser technician license, and opened my own spa in Colleyville called Well Beyond Beauty! I still do freelance makeup and this is just an extension of that!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been easy. Through the past ten years, so many unexpected detours took place. Between planning for a move to finish school that never happened, to getting married at 17, to moving to a new state, to having three babies back to back plus owning a freelance business plus a children’s fitness and nutrition company, a divorce, going back to school with three kids, and then being a single mom now and opening Well Beyond Beauty. It’s been crazy! But it’s been worth every hard unexpected thing. There were so many times I questioned if it would ever happen for me. Sometimes, you have a dream in your heart but the timing for it isn’t what you had anticipated! Be patient, be steadfast, and do what you can with the circumstances you have! You can do it!!
Please tell us about Well Beyond Beauty.
I am an aesthetician and a professional makeup artist! Beauty goes BEYOND makeup, eyelashes, and flawless skin. I aim to bring confidence out of women with my offerings in a way that encourages them to embrace who they are, using my services as a way to enhance but not cover their natural beauty. While medical aesthetic practices are incorporated into WBB, I promote holistic and clean living when reasonable with the addition of essential oils. I find a balance between the two and am passionate about simply being educated about what we put IN and ON our bodies. Overall, Well Beyond Beauty is a space where women are invited to release their insecurities, relax, and be pampered by a professional who cares about the whole person. Facials, chemical peels, LED therapy, Gua Sha, full-service waxing, eyelash extensions, lash lifts and tints, and professional makeup.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to other people in your industry that you look up to! Never think you’ve made it and know it all. Always have a growth mindset! Especially for this industry, literally every day things change and evolve and so it’s important to be teachable and stay up to date on the latest trends and technology! There can be so much competition in this industry, but my heart has always been community over it. Root for your other industry professionals in the area! Befriend them! You never know when you need someone to help you with that 20 person wedding! I have been very lucky to have had really awesome, authentic interactions with other makeup artists and aestheticians in the area. Everybody has a place here.
