Life and Work with Jaimee Leigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaimee Leigh.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jaimee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was a little girl, I would get into my mom’s makeup and play with it. Once I got to the age of 15, I was allowed to start wearing a little bit of makeup and while I would be out and about people would compliment my makeup. I began to be asked to do other makeup just for fun. It was at this point that I realized that this is something I wanted to make into a career. At the age of 18, I went to Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School in San Diego and soon after was offered a position at MAC Cosmetics. That is when my career really began to take off.

At the age of 21, I moved to Los Angeles to be a freelance makeup artist and hairstylist. I went on to work with such brands as Dermalogica and Lululemon as well as working in the entertainment industry on set with George Lopez.

We decided to relocate to Dallas where my husband is from in order to be closer to family and really set roots for our family. We have been in Texas for 2 1/2 years now and couldn’t be happier. I am still a freelance artist working with several local photographers. I have recently decided to launch a makeup product line to help better serve my amazing clientele.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have absolutely had my fair share of obstacles throughout my career so far. I wish I could say it has been a smooth road, but it has not. While in Los Angeles, I faced an exorbitant amount of competition which oftentimes forces freelance artists to accept low rates in order to secure the opportunity making it difficult to operate a business.

If I could give one piece of advice to young woman starting out in their journey it would be to find those in your profession that are the best at what they do and then work to be at that level. It will push you past personal barriers. If you’re so fortunate, having a mentor that is at the top of your profession will only help expedite the learning curve and help avoid unnecessary pitfalls.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a professional makeup artist and hairstylist that specializes in all types of events from weddings, family portraits, award ceremonies and even boudoir. Most of the makeup and hairstyles I request to do can be classified as glam.

I am most proud of my ability to make women feel beautiful and empowered simply by highlighting what was already there.

I feel like what sets me apart from others is my outgoing personality which allows me to connect with clients far beyond just a simple business transaction.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
