Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Flynn.
Jordan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Established in 2016 and based in Dallas, Texas. Mod + Jo was born out of frustration in the lack of quality and unique accessories that wouldn’t break the bank. This, along with the passion to create, is what made us who we are. We strive to bestow confidence in women with affordable, quality jewelry that won’t hurt your wallet. So, we’re rethinking what budget-friendly jewelry really means by providing you with handcrafted accessories made with heart out of Dallas, Texas.
Every item in the collection is currently handmade by myself, the founder and designer of Mod + Jo. From gold plating the details to hammering the texture of our best selling fringe earrings, I am the one constructing each piece that goes out the door to our partners and customers.
What inspires me the most and our collections? I’m mostly inspired by recent travels along with architecture and color combinations we find in the city and nature. I have been fortunate enough to be able to spend the last two years traveling across over 10 countries. I am constantly sketching ideas on my phone or on random napkins during travels and day to day, so that I can turn them into new designs once returning to the studio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an entrepreneur and a sole business owner, I feel we are all cursed with at least a little self-doubt on a regular basis. So, the internal struggle is one of the biggest hurdles to get through. I started creating jewelry seven years ago and was creating anything I could with the materials in front of me – this design model was not giving me the aesthetic I had desired – my target audience was not purchasing from me and I wasn’t even wearing my own product. I didn’t understand what I was going wrong and began to feel discouraged.
After a few years, my husband and I were given the opportunity to move abroad, with this life change, I closed my business and took almost a year off from designing. This gave me the opportunity to take a step back and reevaluate my brand, my vision and what I wanted to represent with my craft. I decided my best option was to rebrand and start with a clean slate. While living in the middle of China in the spring of 2016, Mod + Jo was born. After my launch date, I woke up the next morning to more orders than I anticipated and realized I was finally on to something good.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mod + Jo – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our customers know Mod + Jo for our colorful statement earrings and pre-layered necklaces. We also launched an elevated collection in February of this year called The Everyday that is created from 14k gold-fill. Our customer’s are loving the higher quality material that provides them the look and durability of solid gold but the convenience of affordable prices.
As the founder of Mod + Jo, I am most proud of having our products handcrafted in Dallas by myself and a few production assistance. This, along with our affordable price point, sets us apart from other designers in the same playing field.
Who have you been inspired by?
My mom has always inspired me to be brave and stay true to myself. She always taught me to be kind and open-minded to everything and everyone around me. She never let me quit as a child, even when I wasn’t very good at the said activity (let’s just say I am not very athletic, coordinated or rhythmic). This allowed me to not be afraid to take a chance on myself when it came to creating and starting my own business. My mom, along with all of my other family members, is what keeps my fire burning to pursue my dream.
I have also admired many other jewelry designers from afar. My first love was Lulu Frost, a New York-based designer who focused on the combination of vintage and modern elements. I have also been inspired by Kendra Scott’s story in how she formed her brand and the success she has become today. Though our style is not much of the same, I see a lot of similarities in how we began and I one day hope to have a story such as hers.
