Today we’d like to introduce you to Karin Hargrove.
Karin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2010, I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications. After two years in the “real world” I realized I didn’t love what I was doing, I didn’t feel fulfilled, and it was time for a change! I saved up my money, quit my job and started chasing my dreams!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own company isn’t easy, but it is very rewarding. You must be prepared to hear “no”… a lot. Know that you will fail many times. I experimented with tons of adhesive combinations before I found the perfect one that could hold my stones without them falling off. When you own your own business, you will work way more than 40 hours a week!
Please tell us about Shop Karin Ashley.
I design colorful home decor using natural stones. I’m best known for my Amethyst boxes. I’m most proud of the fact that every piece that leaves my studio is handmade by me.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
As women, we are exceptional multi-taskers. We can do it all! I always knew I wanted to own my own business and have a family.
