Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinda Makini.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My image consulting story began by watching my parents prepare for their workdays. They always taught my siblings and I to never step foot out of the door without looking presentable to the world. I never took that lightly and for all I knew, that’s how everyone thought! At an early age, I was so engaged in watching my parents put the final touches on their outfits (as well as the fabulous actresses on “Dynasty”) and began to follow suit at age 6. Looking good was in my DNA and I wanted to help others do the same.
I began styling friends and family while in college. It gave me balance while I was in the midst of going to school full time and working two jobs (to keep from having student loans). I adored styling others but found that it just didn’t stop there. You can look good but not have the best communication skills to seal the deal. As I went through my journey, it was apparent that I could help others with verbal and non-verbal communication skills, I learned how to do this by just watching people on campus. That was an experience that money could not buy! I used this knowledge, coupled it with styling and here I am now as an Image Consultant.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey with becoming an Image Consultant has its challenges. Working a full-time job, balancing family and creating a successful business is hard work! With my faith and support system (family and friends), I was able to overcome some major obstacles. Failures became learning opportunities as if I did not fail, I wouldn’t know how to handle certain situations. There are a lot of ups and downs (hopefully, there are more ups than downs!) but you have to keep pushing. Small wins along the way give me a reason to celebrate!
To young women that are starting their journey, gain as much knowledge in the industry that you are focused on. Refine your skills and gain experience by collaborating with others in your industry. Building valuable connections is key and extremely important. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Also, go to events that creatives in your industry will be attending. It’s a great way to make connections! Lastly, stay organized. It’s so important and helpful!
Please tell us about K. Makini Image Consulting.
K. Makini Image Consulting provides personal styling, shopping and wardrobe makeover services for women, men and children. I also work with clients to enhance their personal brands by refining their verbal and nonverbal communication skills. I pride myself on providing affordable services for my clients.
My most recent work includes directing fashion show productions, styling for the Honeydrops Foundation Men’s Fashion Show, editorial fashion shoots, celebrity red carpet personal styling and styling wedding parties. I also do a weekly video called the “Fashion Review” on social media where I find the most fabulous, fashionable people and review their outfits!
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My parents play and played a big part in me becoming an Image Consultant. They are sticklers in speaking well, looking good and leaving a great impression with others. Education was (and still is) a must and working hard was expected. If you only have one opportunity to make a great impression and you don’t play or look the part, you could lose out on sealing the deal on a multi-million dollar contract! Image plays a big part in what we do day-to-day and I use all the skills/life lessons learned from my parents to assist my clients.
