Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Rodriguez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Laurie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Back in 2014 I was introduced to lash extensions. I soon became interested in learning the art of how to apply them myself. I did some research and signed up for a certification class. I became a certified Lash Artist, February 2015 and began doing lashes during any free time I had. I was working full time, attending college full time and doing lashes any of the extra time I had. I soon realized that I needed to give something up. After 8 years of working in the Human Resources field I was ready to purse lashing full time. I had a great mentor who always pushed me to see that I had the potential to make this my new career. I started off working from home and in 2016 was presented with a great opportunity. I then joined a great growing lash business in Oak Cliff where I started as the lash assistant and 2 years later was the Shop Manager and Senior Lash Artist. Once I saw that lashing was my new passion I attended Cosmetology school to get my license during 2016. I soon realized that I was ready to try and venture out on my own. I decided to relocate my business from Oak Cliff to Cedar Hill. I had the support of my amazing family and wonderful clients to continue with my business. I am now looking to add 2 team members to my studio. I currently offer lash extensions and lash lifts. I will add services in the near future as I plan to obtain my Esthetician License.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life is full of challenges, but we must learn from them to turn them into lessons. First and foremost was the sacrifice with my family. My husband and I had to agree together that this new career was going to take time away from home and our daughter. I had to miss a few school functions, family dinners and even parties. But know that all the sacrifices at the beginning will pay off in the long run. I started off as the “yes man” who worked 7 days a week, any time of day. Now I can proudly say 3 years later that I manage my schedule and work 5 days a week, with hours that are accommodating to both my clients and myself. Then came the challenge of comparing myself to others. I had to quickly learn not to compare my lashing to other artist who have years in the business. The best way to see your own growth is to compare your work to your own. Look back at how you were lashing a few months back so you can see that you are improving. In this industry you must remember to practice, practice, practice.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Laurie Lash Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Laurie Lash Studio is a space where women feel welcomed and beautiful. We specialize in lash extensions that give off a very natural look. Also lash lifts that enhance the natural lashes. We will strive to make sure that every person that leaves the studio feels better about themselves both inside and out. The look on their face when they see the results is motivation enough for me to keep going every day. I will continue to grow and educate myself and my future team to always provide our clients with the best.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel that the beauty industry is full of opportunities for woman. This field is made for women not only to make themselves feel better but to empower each other. We need to change the way society is making us look at each other as competition. It should be collaboration over competition. So we can help each other grow and what better industry than the beauty world to start.
